I have been blogging for over two years now and although and I’m no expert, I’ve somehow mananged to make this crazy online world my job. I make a decent amount of money which of course varies from month to month depending on how much work comes in, but it can often be what I was earning back when I worked a 9-5 office job.
The question I get asked the most about blogging is how do I make money from it? This can be from people who have no idea about blogging and are just curious. Or it might be from other bloggers, usually those who are just starting out and want to know how to get started with making money.
There is so much to talk about when it comes to earning an income from blogging but I will try and keep this as short and to the point as possible. If you have any questions, don’t hestite to get in touch.
The main way that I make money from my blog is through brand work. This is simply where a brand pays you to write a post promoting their product or service.
Here are a few examples of paid brand work I have done recently…
- Top tips for dealing with chickenpox
- An early Father’s Day with Snapfish
- A very special necklace – Thomas Sabo Generation Charm Club
- Easy2name Labels review
- Mother’s Day gift guide
Bloggers can also make money through affiliate links. This is where you earn a small percentage of a sale when someone clicks through a link on your blog. I am starting to use affiliate links more and more but in all honestly it doesn’t earn me much money. It’s great for bigger bloggers though, who have a much larger audience.
As a blogger you will often be contacted by SEO (search engine optimisation) agencies who will be looking to pay you to add a link to their clients website in a blog post. It took me a while to understand how this all works but basically the more links a website has from good quality sites, the better their ranking on google. Buying and selling do follow links in this way is frowned upon by Google so it’s not advised and in my experience SEO’s generally do not pay very well anyway.
Another way to earn money from your blog is by advertising in the firm of display ads. You will find that many bloggers use Google adsense for this but you can also sell sidebar ads directly to brands. I don’t currently have any display ads on my blog just because I don’t like how they look and they would only earn me pennies, so for me it isn’t really worth it. But, if your blog gets a lot of traffic, display ads could potentially make you a decent amount of money and with very little effort.
If you read my recent post about YouTube, you’ll know that I have stopped vlogging for now. I only have a small following on my YouTube channel so I didn’t get all that much in the way of brand work. I have however, worked with Mumsnet on a few video campaigns which are then hosted on their own YouTube channel. The fee for video content is generally higher than a blog post as there is a lot more time and effort that goes into creating it.
Aside from brand work on YouTube, you can also earn money from the ads that play before videos. I don’t know the ins and outs of this as it’s not something I’ve ever done, but similarly to display ads on blogs I imagine the money that these ads make is tiny and only really beneficial to big YouTubers.
Some months Instagram is actually my main money earner, which is great as it is my absolute favourite social media platform.
Making money on Instagram as you would imagine is purely based on brand work. A brand will pay you x amount of money to create a post promoting their product or service. It could be an image, a video, Instagram stories or a combination of the three.

This one absolutely loves ketchup, she would have it on everything if I let her. Now that Heinz have released their no added sugar and salt ketchup, I can hand back control of the bottle and feel less guilt over what she’s eating. Letting her have ketchup with her food really helps to encourage her to eat things that she wouldn’t usually try, including her vegetables! #ad #heinzketchup #NoAddedSugar

This month Galaxy launched their ‘30 days of pleasure campaign’. They are encouraging us to seek small, daily pleasures and it’s definitely something I can get on board with! I don’t know about you, but life is busy and I’m guilty of not making enough time for myself. So today I decided to take myself off to my bedroom for a while with a cuppa, a good book and of course my favourite chocolate. It’s amazing what a little ‘me time’ can do for you. So I’ve made a promise to myself to make a little more time for me, and you should too. Whether it’s a yoga class, a quiet walk or like me, simply enjoying a cup of tea and a book in peace, choose pleasure each day. #choosepleasure @galaxyuk #ad
Usually my Instagram work comes from brands and agencies that contact me directly but I also use the Takumi and Tribe apps which I really like. I find that Tribe pays much better than Takumi, however with Tribe you have to create the content first and submit it for approval so sometimes it won’t be accepted even though you’ve already done the work. I have used the Indahash app before but the amount they pay is tiny and really not worth the time in my opinion.
I hope that this has been helpful and maybe you’ve learnt something from it. If there’s any other posts you’d like me to write about blogging or Instagram then do leave me a comment and let me know.
Thank you for reading.
