On Friday Max finally had his very first swimming lesson! We’d been meaning to book them for months but for one reason or another we had just never gotten round to it.
Max is very confident in water and loves going swimming. Water seems to be something that really helps to calm him down whenever he’s feeling upset or anxious. We have tried our very best to teach him the basics of swimming but it’s not always easy, so obviously we wanted to make sure that he was able to swim properly by paying for him to have lessons.
He was really excited about his lesson and went straight off with his group and new instructor with no problems at all. I did, however have a bit of a panic at one point as for a split second I thought that he had gone with the wrong instructor and had visions of him jumping into deep water and being made to do things that are above his abilities! Luckily he was with the correct group and it all went really well.
The other kids in the group clearly had more experience than Max so they were confidently floating on their backs and splashing about. When Max was asked to try and float on his back he did struggle to start with, but by the end of the 30 minute lesson he had pretty much nailed it! It’s amazing what they can achieve in such a short amount of time.
One of the reasons I’d put lessons off for so long was because he sometimes struggles to concentrate on what he’s supposed to be doing. I think that now he’s at school and he understands the role of a teacher and that he should always be doing what they ask him to do, it’s made swimming lessons easier as he knew it was important to listen to his instructor.
I’m so glad that his first lesson went well and I can’t wait to see how he gets on next week.
Thanks for reading.
