These past few weeks have been crazy with so many appointments going on for Max. We’ve had the visit from the autism nurse, our first autism workshop, two hospital appointments yesterday and we’ve also got our second autism workshop and a school meeting with Max’s teacher and the school SENCO coming up.
I know a lot of you like to keep up with Max and how he’s getting on so I thought I’d write this quick update.
Yesterdays appointments were an eye check up and a follow up hearing test. I wrote about Max’s hearing problems after our last appointment and you can read about it here.
Max wasn’t at school Yesterday as it was a training day, but Evie was at preschool as usual. It meant me and Max got to spend the whole day together just me and him which was really nice as it isn’t something we usually get to do. It made things a bit as it meant I didn’t have to collect Max from school early.
I scheduled both appointments on the same afternoon, I though it was best to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. So we had audiology at 2:10pm followed by the eye check up at 3:30pm, which I thought was perfect timing but we actually ended up with a big wait inbetween appointments!
Luckily Max tends to cope pretty well with hospital appointments and doesn’t get anxious about them, although I am very grateful for all the toys in the waiting rooms because he does not do sitting still!
I have to admit I was a little nervous as I really didn’t want to have any more bad news for him. It feels like every appointment he has there is never any good news.
The audiology appointment was the one that I was most nervous about as I knew that if his hearing hadn’t improved we would be referred to Ear, Nose and Throat for possible hearing aid or grommet, and I really didn’t want this for him on top of his other problems. So I was crossing everything for some good news this time!
The test itself only took about 10 minutes and he co operated really well. He passed with flying colours and will now be discharged, yay!
After the hearing test and killing some time in the cafe, off we went to the eye department. We were still pretty early but luckily they saw us before our appointment time as they weren’t too busy.
Max has been wearing glasses since December, with a pretty strong prescription but has adjusted to them extremely well. He has a check up every couple of months and at the last check up no changes were made to his prescription as they were happy with how he was seeing in them.
This time they found that his left eye was improving but his right eye (his worse eye) hasn’t improved at all. The optician explained that he has a slight squint in his right eye, so it turns in ever so slightly meaning it struggles to focus. Wearing a patch over his good eye should help to strengthen his bad eye, so we were sent away with two boxes of eye patches and an appointment for two months time.
Ideally he should be wearing the patches for 4 – 6 hours a day so please wish us luck, I’m sure it’s going to be a challenge to get him to wear them! I’ll be sure to update you all on how we get on.
Thanks for reading.
