Our Top Ten Travel Essentials #MarkWarnerMum

Travelling is a big passion of ours. Before we had the children travelling was pretty easy and there wasn’t that much planning and preparartion involved. Now that we have the children we still love travelling just as much but it definitely requires a lot more thought and there are some items that we simply couldn’t do without on holidays, especially with a child with autism. With this in mind, I have put together a list of ten family travel essentials as my entry for the Mark Warner ambassador competition.

Family travel essentials

iPad

I think an iPad is an essential for many parents these days but for us with a child with autism it really is a lifesaver. When we went to Corfu last year it could have saved a lot of stress on the flight home, had it been preloaded will games and videos.

Hats

Hats are an must have for both children to protect them from the sun. But even more so for Evie, who like me had very fair skin and so can burn very easily.

Sun protection

We use the Green People sun protection and find it to be really good not only at protecting them from the sun but also kind on their sensitive skin.

Swim jackets

I only recently discovered swim jackets after a friend recommended them to me and now I couldn’t be without them. They are perfect for the pool on holiday as they keep the children safe and help to put my mind at rest.

Travel sickness bands

Max suffers with travel sickness and these children’s travel bands have worked fantastically for us. When we went to Corfu, which is known for it’s winding roads, we hired a car one day and forgot to put the bands on Max which ended in three vomit stops! So we don’t go anywhere in the car without them now.

Books

I always take a book for myself to read around the pool, it’s a great way to relax whilst daddy plays with the kids. But we also take plenty of books for the kids too so that we can read to them at bedtime as we would do at home. This helps to keep their normal routine going, which is extremely important for us with a child with autism.

Camera

I love taking photos. I’m never happier than when I’m snapping away, so my camera is an absolute must have for me. When we went to Edinburgh for Hogmanay I forgot the memory card for my camera, so couldn’t use it and I was so sad about it!

Baby wipes

Even though my children are no longer babies I still carry baby wipes with me wherever I go. On holiday they are great for cleaning hands after applying sun lotion, or for wiping sticky ice cream faces!

Drinks

We always carry drinks bottles around with us during the warm weather, as it’s so important to keep the children hydrated. We use these Sistema bottles as I find that they never leak and are easy for the kids to drink from without spillages.

Sunglasses

I couldn’t be without my sunglasses when the sun is shining and my kid are exactly the same. They absolutely hate the sun shining in their eyes and always want to wear their sunglasses. Max has prescription sunglasses due to his eyesight but Evie is free to wear any that she likes, and has just informed me that she now needs Minnie Mouse sunglasses.

Before we had the kids, back in 2009 we went on a big adventure to America, visiting Boston, Cape Cod, New York, Orlando and Miami. It really was the trip of a lifetime and one which I still dream of now.

Fast forward to last year and our holidays have definitely changed from back then but although they may be different now, they are just as special. Last year we enjoyed our first family holiday abroad to the beautiful island of Corfu, here are a few of my favourite photos from our holiday…

This year we have a few UK breaks planned and also a trip to Disneyland Paris in November, which we are super excited about! We would absolutely love to be able to add a Mark Warner holiday to our travel plans for this year, whether it be sun or ski, we are always on the look out for new adventures.

Thanks for reading.
