So you’re thinking of planning a trip to Ireland but you’re not sure where to start? Look no further! This article is full of tips and advice to follow to ensure you have the very best Irish road trip.
Ireland is a stunning country with so much to see and do. Known for it’s beautiful coastline and amazing landscapes, you’ll never want to leave. Here are six things to consider when planning your Irish road trip…
Consider your budget
First things first, you must consider your budget before you begin planning. This is really going to determine what your trip looks like. If you have a smaller budget you will probably have to take a shorter trip and look for cheaper accommodation options. You could even look at hiring a motor home and sleeping in it while you travel. Of course if you have a large budget you have the freedom to choose where you stay and how long for.
Booking accommodation
As I mentioned above, your budget will determine the sort of accommodation you can consider. With a generous budget you could book luxury hotels or cosy country cottages. If you have a tighter budget you could stay in hostels, which are a great way to save some money. Ben Lettery hostels are ideal as they provide a range of different options and even have WiFi available.
When to visit
As with England, Scotland and Wales, it rains a lot in Ireland and particularly during autumn and winter. It can also get very cold and travelling around rural Ireland might not be much fun. So I would suggest visiting in spring or summer when the weather is better. This way you will really get the most out of your holiday.
Car hire
Vehicle hire is essential for getting the most out of an Irish road trip. A lot of Ireland is rural, so you can’t always rely on public transport. There are some fantastic deals to be found on car and even motor home hire if you have the time to put in a little research.

Plan your itinerary
When planning your itinerary, start by deciding on the places that you know for sure you want to visit. Once you have these mapped out, you can start looking at possible stop off points along the way. There are lots of itinerary ideas online, this is a great place to start looking for ideas and inspiration. Connemara in the west of Ireland is a great place to visit, with it’s stunning landscapes, ponies, music and local food. You’ll also find hostels in Connemara, so it’s the perfect place to visit.
What to pack
As previously mentioned, it is best to visit Ireland in the spring or summer when the weather is generally better. However, there is absolutely no guarantees that it won’t rain! So pack your usual spring/summer clothes as well as a pair of waterproof shoes and a jacket. It’s also a good idea to pack some layers as it can be cold, especially in an evening.
