I have been a big Butlins fan ever since I was a kid and I was so excited to take my own children to Butlins. We’ve been a few times now and have always had a great time. The last time we stayed we decided the try out the standard accommodation, which is Butlins cheapest option. Before this we have stayed in a gold apartment, seaside apartment and also one of the fairground apartments. I thought I would share my thoughts on the standard rooms and how they compare to the other options available.
Rooms vs apartments
To be clear, this is a review of a standard room, and not a standard apartment. The difference between the two is that the apartments include a small kitchen area with dining table. As we had paid for a dining plan at Butlins, we didn’t need the kitchen area, so opted for just a room.

What’s included
Standard rooms sleep either two or four people. As we are a family of four, ours slept four. This meant there were two bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with two single beds for the kids. There’s also a small bathroom with shower, no bath. There’s tea and coffee making facilities too and a TV in the main bedroom.
All standard rooms are located on the ground floor which is good for those with accessibility needs or families with a pram.
It’s worth noting that housekeeping and towels are not included with standard rooms, so you will need to take your own towels with you. Something I hadn’t realised prior to going.

Pricing
The standard rooms are the cheapest accommodation option at Butlins Skegness. Of course prices vary massively depending on the time of year and whether it’s term time or not. But to give you a rough idea, for four nights for a family of four during October half term will cost you over £400. But if you went in November during term time for example you could pay as little as £39! Which really is a bargain.
My thoughts
Of course this is only my opinion and everyone will have their own views but to put it bluntly I would not recommend the standard accommodation at Butlins. Yes, it’s cheap but you really do get what you pay for here.
The bathroom had a lot of mould. The walls and carpets were dirty. It all just felt quite grotty, tired and in need of a good clean. With the money that Butlins must be making, I can’t see why they aren’t putting at least a little bit of money into updating these standard rooms.

We have stayed in a few different accommodation types in the past so we do have plenty to compare to. Personally I would recommend paying a bit more if you can and choosing better accommodation. It is just a base and somewhere to sleep at the end of the day, so for some people it might suit you ok. But to be honest I couldn’t wait to leave and would definitely choose alternative accommodation in the future.
Have you stayed in Butlins standard accommodation before? What were your thoughts? Would you stay again?
Thank you for reading.
