OK, so I want to start out here by saying that to me, being a mum is the absolute best and entirely rewarding. I love the time with my little ones; the simple things like reading a book all snuggled up together, fun family time, watching them learn something new and seeing their eyes light up, taking them to play dates and hearing them laugh with their friends. There is also a whole lot of cooking, cleaning, managing the meltdowns and running around in general. The life of a mum: hectic, tiring but absolutely wonderful.
I also want to say that, although it may be difficult to find the time, having some alone time as a mum is a must. By “alone time” I mean time to yourself to just be and focus on you, recharge and take a bit of time away from your role as a mum. In order to be the best mum I can be, I notice I have to take care of myself so I can take care of my little ones as best as I can. So to all the mums out there, do not feel guilty about taking some alone time. In fact, pencil it in! Every mum should have and should take a moment to herself. Even if it is only a small part of the day solely dedicated to yourself, you will find yourself recharged and in even better spirits while you shift back into busy mum-mode. You will thank yourself for it and your family probably will too!
Here are a few ideas on how to enjoy some alone time and the best ways to relax. Everyone is different and the beauty of having alone time is the fact that you get to do what you want. So whatever you choose to do, whether it be one simple thing or a combination of a few, enjoy it!
Go for a walk
Whether a brisk walk or a slow one at your own pace, getting some movement in will give your body and mind a chance to unwind. Turn on some tunes, a podcast or simply enjoy your surroundings.
Get out in nature
Enjoy a cup of tea outside, go for a hike, anything that gets you out in nature and breathing in the fresh air.
Watch a television show
If you enjoy watching television but most of your screen time lately has been all children’s shows, take some time to watch what you want to watch! You can settle in, browse through movies and TV shows on uk.chili.com or any other streaming platform, and enjoy a non-animated something.
Take a long bath
A long hot bath is one of my favourite self-care practices. I’m talking Epsom salt, essential oils, a facemask, lit candles, and fluffy towels. Heaven!
Read a book
I love to read before bed, but after mum-ing all day, I often fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. If that sounds anything like you, carve out some time to dive into a good book during your distraction-free alone time.
When is the last time you got a full night of sleep? A nap is a dreamy way to spend some “me time”.
