mums health

*This is a guest post*

When you’re a mum, few things are as important to maintain, and as difficult, as your health, both physical and emotional. Whether you work multiple jobs or stay at home, have just one child or a whole flock, parenting is an arduous undertaking that will sap every last ounce of energy you have to give, and then just keep on taking.

To even have a hope of keeping up with your energetic, and often mischievous, 5-year-old, while also staying on track to your 9-to-5, whatever it may be, you’ve got to maintain at least a minimum level of good health. But it’s not exactly a stroll through the park. You have nowhere near as much time to get on a treadmill, and that 20-minute boxed dinner certainly sounds more appealing at the end of a long day than two hours over the stove to make a healthy meal, when all you want to do is relax.

What we really need, if we want to set a healthy routine and stick with it, is someone to encourage us and, more importantly, hold us accountable to our health goals. But who can we turn to? Where can we find advice that isn’t mired in opinion instead of fact?

Following are methods that we as mums can use to connect with people who understand our situation, know the facts when it comes to healthy living, and will give us the encouragement we need to keep going.

1.   Join a Health Club

We already touched on the fact that time is a big factor in keeping us from getting the exercise we need to keep our health in good standing. The reality is that we’ve got to make the time to do some form of exercise, ladies, or we’ll never manage to maintain a high level of energy, stay healthy, and stay sane.

A health club is a great option that allows us to meet all three goals. In addition to a wide variety of equipment that allows us to walk on a treadmill, lift some dumbbells, or do some sit-ups, health clubs are very beneficial for the emotional support we need to get a healthy regime started and stick to it.

Health clubs offer us a chance to connect with others who are struggling in their healthy journey, mums just like us who have too many chores and not enough time. Nothing brings people together like shared suffering. Knowing you’re not alone can be just the push you need to overcome your doubts and exhaustion.

A health club will also allow you to attend classes that address your specific needs and fitness goals. If you’re not overweight, but want to stay physical and increase your energy in a way that won’t have you drenched in sweat, yoga is a perfect option. If you’ve got a few pounds you need to get rid off, and are willing to get a little dirty, a spin class is a great way to get your heart rate up and burn off some fat, while enjoying the company of others.

Whatever your goals, a health club is a great way to connect with others like you, address your fitness needs, and find the support you need to keep pushing.

2.   Start a Blog

More and more people are using the internet to connect with others and find answers to questions. Though it might surprise you, starting a blog might be the perfect way for you to find the support you need to stay on track with your healthy goals.

Through blogging, you’ll connect with others who are just starting, or are struggling with, their fitness journey. You’ll also be able to share your experiences, both your victories and failures, with people who will empathize and offer encouragement. It’s also a great way to get some great tips to improve your own healthy routines, or get started if you haven’t done so.

Further down the road, your blog might even become a source of additional income for you. As your readership grows, you’ll attract the attention of businesses and other bloggers that want to advertise with you, submit some guest posts, or optimize their search engine results through links on your blog.

A blog is also perfect for the busy mum, because you don’t have to post very often. Even one to two posts a week will help you connect with readers and keep you on track to achieve your goals. Blogging is also very easy to start – once you have registered a domain, you just need to set up a basic template for your blog, and you’re ready to write.

3.   Hire a Personal Trainer

Maybe you’re not a big social person, and the idea of being surrounded by people at the gym, or being bombarded with comments you feel obligated to respond to, doesn’t appeal to you. That’s okay – there are other ways to get the help you need. Hiring a personal trainer combines the benefits of a blog and health club membership, without the need to be surrounded by people.

Good personal trainers are invaluable in pursuing a healthy lifestyle, because they cover all of the bases you need. They can tailor an exercise regime that fits your abilities, goals and schedule, while challenging you to do more than you thought you could; they have a solid knowledge base of nutritional facts to help you develop a diet plan that’s practical, affordable and effective; and they know how to motivate people, whether you need someone to be hard on you to do your best, or just require some gentle words of encouragement.

While most personal trainers operate out of health clubs, there are some who will come to your house, or invite you into theirs, for 1-on-1 training sessions. This can be beneficial because, in addition to not dealing with people, you’re in an environment you feel comfortable in, and won’t feel as embarrassed when you flop on your belly the first time you attempt a sit-up.

If you prefer a more personal connection to achieve your health goals, instead of being enveloped in crowds, a personal trainer is a great option to consider.

Stay on the Path

These are just a few suggestions to help you find the support you need in your fitness goals. Obviously, you’ll also have the support of your family and friends to help keep you straight. Ultimately, there’s no easy path to good health, and 99% of your success can only come from your own efforts. It’s a tough road ladies, but for more energy, a brighter outlook on life, and to feel our best while while setting a great example for our little ones, it’s worth every step!
