Kitchen equipment is an essential part of your home. It can be used to store, prepare, cook and serve food. You should care for your kitchen equipment appropriately to save time, money, and effort! Here you’ll find six tips on how to maintain and care for your pieces:
1. Use Acidic Ingredients with Caution
Acidic ingredients like lemon juice, vinegar, and tomatoes can cause damage to your kitchen tools. The acidity in these foods can cause rust on your pans and dull your knives. If you are going to use acidic ingredients in a recipe, be sure to check the instructions first.
If it says not to use acidic ingredients, then don’t! But if you must and your knives get a bit blunt in the process you can buy a sharpening stone to sharpen your knives in no time!
You should also clean off any excess food that may be leftover after cooking with acidic ingredients. The residue of these foods will sit on the surface of your kitchen equipment and cause even more damage than the original ingredient would have caused alone.
It is recommended that you clean off these residues immediately after cooking rather than wait until later.
2. Don’t Let Your Kitchen Equipment Sit in Water
Kitchen equipment should not be left in water for long periods. This is because moisture can cause rust and damage to the inside of your pots and pans. This can also happen to your utensils if they are left in water for too long.
You should use a drying rack, towel, or dish rack to dry off your cooking equipment after each use. If you don’t have enough space for these drying racks, it may be best to let them air dry rather than putting them away wet.

3. Store Your Equipment Properly
After cleaning and drying off your kitchen equipment, you should store it properly so that it doesn’t become damaged. If your pots and pans are made of metal, you should not store them in a cabinet where they can bump into other items.
Instead, you should store them in a cupboard or on a shelf where they can be separated from other pieces of equipment.
4. Clean Your Kitchen Equipment Regularly
You should clean your kitchen equipment regularly because it will help to prevent rust and damage to the inside of your pots and pans. This is especially important if you have some dishes that have been sitting around for a while.
If you don’t feel like cleaning them right away, at least wash the food residue off with warm water so that it doesn’t build up inside of your kitchen equipment.
5. Clean Your Kitchen Equipment With Soap and Water
You should clean your kitchen equipment with soap and water at least once per week to prevent rust and the build-up of minerals in your pots, pans, and dishes.
You can use a sponge or a dish brush to get into all of the nooks and crannies of your kitchen equipment. If you have a dishwasher, you can put your kitchen equipment in there for cleaning as well.
6. Clean Your Kitchen Equipment With Vinegar
If you want to get rid of mineral build-up in your kitchen equipment, you can soak it in vinegar for several hours or overnight. This will help the vinegar to dissolve mineral deposits and make them easier to scrub off.
