How long have you been with your partner? Whether it’s been a year or a decade, it’s worth setting aside time for just the two of you.
Of course, this isn’t always easy. You might have the kids to put to bed, a hectic work schedule, a messy house that needs sorting every weekend. By the time everything is done, you may find that you have five minutes left in your day to catch up before you go to sleep.
But if it’s possible to focus on your partner for a couple of hours, you’ll find it can go a long way towards strengthening your relationship.
The power of date night
‘Date night’ is a misleading term. After all, spending quality time with your partner doesn’t have to be confined to the evening. However, the phrase is a useful shortcut to tapping into the importance of making time for our relationship.
According to Marriage Foundation research, married couples who go on occasional date nights have 14% lower odds of their relationship breaking down. This reinforces the idea that, by making time where possible for each other, you are more likely to be able to strengthen your bond.
It’s not just for married couples or those with busy lifestyles, though. Simply setting aside time for each other is a positive approach to your relationship.

Relationship wellbeing activities
So, what activities would you like to try? Date night could be a dinner. Maybe you want to cook for them or perhaps you want to go out for a meal? This a lovely way to spend time together and put all your focus on the other person.
Here are some more ways to bring you closer together:
- Movie night
You might decide to go to the cinema or, for a cosy night, why not snuggle up on the sofa and stream one of your favourite films? This is the perfect way to while away the evening, plus you can bond over the plot.
- Play a game
Whether you’re competitive or simply enjoy taking on a challenge, a games night could be lots of fun. You could break out the board games, play cards, or power up the Nintendo and get into a few laps of Mario Kart.
- A weekend getaway
Getting away from the everyday can be just what you need. You might need to plan this in advance, especially if you have children and need to ask relatives to babysit, but it can be so worth it – especially if you get to indulge in a dip in a pool or a spa treatment too!
Fancy something more action-packed?
- Go for a run
Running releases endorphins and give you both the chance to get outside. You might choose a full 5k or take things down to a simple stroll. If you do end up walking, you can use this time to catch up.
- Organise a cycling holiday
If you long to travel, why not explore a new destination by bike? Cycling holidays are a great way to see new places and going together will make you feel like you’re both part of the same team.
- Indoor rock climbing
Scaling walls can be lots of fun. As well as building your stamina, you can encourage each other as you build your climbing knowledge and try increasingly challenging paths to the top.
How do you spend your time with your partner? Will you try some of these ideas out?
