Last week as part of our work with Great British Racing this summer, the children were invited along to Grenoside Equestrian Centre for a horse riding lesson. This was the first time either of them had ever rode a horse so they were unsure what to expect, but they both loved it. So much so that they’ve been asking to go again ever since!
Since we went to Ascot racecourse last month the kids have shown an interest in horses and jockeys so I knew they would love having a horse riding lesson, which is of course where every jockey has to start!
We arrived at Grenoside Equestrain Centre just before the children’s 10am lesson. Lessons at Grenoside cost £15 per child, per lesson. The kids started by getting their helmets on and were then paired up with a horse. They had to stand on steps to be able to mount their horses which was quite funny to watch, there’s definitely a skill to it!
They then headed into the arena on their horses with their instructors guiding them along. Evie was a little nervous to begin with but she soon relaxed. They were taught how to make their horse trot, how to make them turn either left or right and even how to gallop. The lesson was 30 minutes long and I was surprised at just how much they managed to do in this time.
The kids absolutely loved their horse riding lesson, they learned so much in just one session and they enjoyed telling me all about it afterwards. We will definitely be taking them back again soon.
If you too have a budding jockey on your hands then why not take them along to a family race day this summer? As part of Great British Racings Under 18s Race Free initiative there are 60 racecourses across Great Britain where children are admitted free of charge. We enjoyed a day at Pontefract races last week and are off to Southwell next week and it’s such a great day out for all the family. To find out more click here.
