Last week we finally got round to visiting The Tropical Butterfly House, seeing as it’s voted the number one thing to do in Sheffield on Tripadvisor, I’m surprised it’s taken us so long to get round to going!
It was one of our last days out of the summer holidays and it didn’t disappoint, the sun was shining and we had a lovely afternoon. Both Max and Evie love animals so I just knew they would love it.
When you enter there is a little Guinea Pig village which is so cute! Me and Evie spend ages cooing over the Guinea Pigs and their little Guinea Pig sized houses.
Next the kids spotted the playground so of course we had to go straight in there. There’s an area for younger kids and one for older kids, both of which are brilliant. The younger children’s play area has a sand pit complete with buckets and spades, Evie had lots of fun building some sandcastles. There is also a splash area which we didn’t know about before we got there, which meant that we weren’t prepared so unfortunately we didn’t get to go in. It did look fantastic though from what I could see, we will definitely have to go back next summer to have a splash around.
The butterfly house itself is great, with lots of different kinds of butterflies and birds flying all around you. There are also crocodiles, reptiles and insects to discover. I must admit I’m not usually a fan of things that can fly at you but even I enjoyed it!
There is plenty more to see and do at the park including the dinosaur trail, wilderness walk, farm barn, otter springs, chipmunk cabin and more!
I was really surprised by all the different animals they had. I had kind of expected it to just be butterflies and a few other tropical creatures. I certainly hadn’t expected the farm animals, lemurs or giant tortoises!
We had lunch at home before we left but if you are wanting to eat while you are there, there is a big picnic area and also the Butterfly Cafe. We stopped and had an ice cream from the gift shop on our way out, there is a nice little seating area just there.
We had a great day at The Tropical Butterfly House and are looking forward to going back again next summer. I’d highly recommend it, it’s a great family day out for children of all ages.
The Tropical Butterfly House is open all year round, excluding Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Adult tickets are priced at £10.75, children’s tickets £9.50 and a family ticket is £36.50.

So glad I read this, I love in South yorkshire and have never been, but meant to at least 5 times. I’m going for the guinea pig Kingdom, I have a slight obsession with them. #PicknMix
