Last weekend we spent a lovely few days at Landal Darwin Forest Luxury Lodges in Derbyshire, and we had such a great time there. I’d seen a bit about Landal Darwin Forest on Instagram and thought it looked incredible, so we were thrilled when they invited us to stay.
Landal Darwin Forest is located in stunning woodland close to Matlock and Bakewell on the edge of the Peak District in Derbyshire. It’s actually not too far from where we live in Sheffield and only took us around 45 minutes to get there. It’s a beautiful location and there’s lots to do both on the site and in the surrounding area, which I will cover later on in this post.
“Proud holder of the 2019 Hoseasons ‘Best in Britain’ Award, this top park unites scenic splendour with truly fabulous facilities – perfect for enjoying quality family time at entirely your own pace. With an abundance of activities available on site, from tennis, mini-golf, footpaths and cycling trails to Bodyzorbing, archery, Waterwalkerz and snorkelling, there really is something for everyone to enjoy.”
We stayed in a Glade Exclusive Spa two bedroom lodge which was new in 2017, and it was absolutely amazing. We’ve stayed in lodges before but this was by far the nicest we’ve ever stayed in.
There are lots of different accommodation options at Landal Darwin Forest, with varying prices so it’s worth having a look on their website to see what’s on offer.
Our accommodation was spacious, clean, modern and cosy. We really couldn’t have asked for more. As we entered the lodge we were straight into the open plan kitchen, living and dining area. Included was a flat screen TV with freeview and DVD player, coffee machine, microwave and dishwasher.
Double doors lead out on to the large decking area with furniture and the all important hot tub! The decking area was a really generous size and would be perfect for a BBQ in the summer. We loved having the hot tub and spent lots of time in it over the weekend. The kids loved it too.
Our bedrooms were lovely and spacious too and the beds were really comfortable, we all slept well while we were away. Each bedroom had a dressing area and ensuite bathroom. Our bathroom had a lovely big bath and even an integrated TV.
Things to do
At Landal Darwin Forest you are surrounded by woodland so one of our favourite things to do there was to go for walks. You can also book activities such as archery, fencing, bodyzorbing, snorkelling and more.
When it went dark in the evenings the woods were lit up with colour changing lights, which was really magical…
At Landal Darwin Forest you will also find a swimming pool, spa, gym, kids soft play area, children’s playground and the Activity Den which includes pool tables, air hockey and other games. There’s certainly no shortage of things to do.
If you want to eat out during your stay there is Foresters restaurant on site which we went to one evening. It was a lovely cosy setting, the food was great and there was even colouring and games to keep the children occupied while they waited for their food to arrive.
In the area
If you are wanting to explore the local area during your stay, you will find plenty to do. On the Saturday we headed over to Chatsworth House which you may know from Pride and Prejudice. It’s only a 10 minute drive from Landal Darwin Forest and it’s beautiful at Christmas time. We got to look around the house, wander through the gardens, toast marshmallows and get lost in the maze. If you’re staying at Landal I would definitely recommend taking a trip to Chatsworth, it’s a great day out.
On the Sunday we found out that there was a Victorian Christmas market being held in Matlock, so we spent a couple of hours there. We browsed the stalls, the kids ate crepes and went on fairground rides while the grown ups got to enjoy a mulled gin!
We absolutely loved our time at Landal Darwin Forest and would 100% recommend it for a UK family break. Not only were the lodge and hot tub fantastic but the surrounding area is stunning too. There’s plenty to do both on site and in the area so it’s perfect for families who want to stay occupied. Likewise if you’re looking for a quiet break as a couple, you couldn’t find a more peaceful and relaxing location.
Prices do vary depending on the accommodation you choose, so definitely check out the Landal website. But to give you a rough idea, for the lodge that we stayed in prices start from £825 for a week which I think is reasonable considering that this is a luxury holiday.
A big thank you to Landal Darwin Forest for having us, we had a great time and will definitely be back again in the future.
