What is the importance of confidence from a young age?
Building confidence is important from an early age, even for babies and infants, in helping them develop self-assurance, resilience to overcome and handle challenges, and have the ability to form social interactions and relationships as they grow older. There are psychological and physical ways to help your little ones with this as they advance through their younger years.
Psychological and emotional methods to build confidence in little ones
One of the ways parents can build confidence in their babies and infants is by providing them with a supportive and nurturing environment and by building their inner confidence through methods like intentional praise and encouragement. This refers to praising not only their accomplishments but also their efforts, and being intentional, e.g., clapping when they are kind to people, as opposed to praising simply everything they do. Confidence can be further developed through showing little ones an abundance of love and affection – and no level of love can is too much.
Another important factor in building confidence in babies and infants is socialization. Babies and infants should be given opportunities to interact with other children, of different ages, and as well as adults, in a safe and supportive environment. Socialization can help babies and infants develop their social skills, which can be essential for their emotional and psychological development.
Montessori said “the consciousness of knowing how to make oneself useful, how to help mankind in many ways, fills the soul with noble confidence…” Providing infants with the necessary skills to do their own daily activities helps them feel valued based on their own personal contribution (even from a tiny age!) and helps their self-esteem to grow.

Physical methods to build confidence in little ones
Physical activity helps babies and infants develop their gross motor skills, which are important for their overall physical development. It also helps them develop a sense of control over their bodies, which can boost their confidence. Simple activities such as tummy time, crawling, and rolling can help babies and infants develop these skills.
Posture is also an important factor in building confidence in babies and infants. Good posture from an early age contributes to babies and infants feeling more comfortable and secure in their bodies and adding to their psychological wellbeing. It also helps them develop a sense of balance and coordination, which can be essential for their physical development.
One way to encourage good posture and spinal development in babies and infants is through their seating position. Parents should ensure that their baby’s seating position is appropriate for their age and stage of development. For young babies over 6 months old and who can sit unaided, it is important to not be too reclined and seated in an upright position. This helps babies develop their core muscles and balance. Where this is particularly relevant for is in prams and especially compact prams which tend to be reclined. One way of overcoming this is by using an ergonomic pram cushion – The Wedge – which helps babies sit fully upright in the pram and has been paediatrician endorsed for good posture and spinal development.

Another way to encourage good posture in babies and infants is through regular stretching and exercise. Simple exercises such as stretching, bending, and reaching can help babies and infants develop their muscles and improve their posture. These exercises can be incorporated into their daily routine, such as during nappy changes or playtime.
In addition to posture and seating position, parents can also build confidence in their babies and infants by providing them with opportunities to explore and learn through ‘guided discovery’. This can be achieved through playtime, reading, and other interactive activities. Parents should provide their babies and infants with age-appropriate toys and games that stimulate their senses and encourage exploration.
In conclusion, building confidence in babies and infants is essential for their overall development and confidence. Parents and carers can achieve this by providing a supportive and nurturing environment, encouraging physical activity, promoting good posture and seating position, providing opportunities for exploration and learning, and encouraging socialization. By doing so, parents can help their babies and infants develop into confident individuals who are ready to take on the challenges of life.
