winning lottery

When you wake up after a good night’s sleep, you feel rested and ready to go. Your body and mind are recharged and you’re in optimal shape to face the challenges of a new day.

When you win a huge cash prize playing the lottery, you feel excited. You are energised, almost to the point of being out of breath. It seems like you’re on top of the world, that you can do anything you want. Celebrations are called for whereas getting into bed for a good night’s sleep is probably not the first thing you would consider.

It might be surprising, therefore, to learn that a study published by the University of Warwick discovered that “improving your sleep quality leads to levels of mental and physical health comparable to those of somebody who’s won a jackpot of around £200,000.”

In a paper published in SLEEP, an international journal for sleep and circadian science, Dr Nicole Tang of Warwick’s Department of Psychology wrote that when you improve your sleeping habits, you will feel as good as if you had just won the lottery. What this means, Tang wrote, is that in both cases you would have higher levels of health and wellbeing.

Most of us are aware of the benefits of getting a good night’s sleep. Sleep, we know, is as important to our overall health as getting enough physical exercise and proper nutrition. We also may realise that the quality of our sleep is more important than the quantity of our sleep. If we want to improve our sleeping habits, we’ll keep to a regular schedule of going to bed at the same time every night. We’ll put our worries and concerns aside to let our bodies and minds fully prepare for the next day.

But what about the benefits of winning the lottery? We may purchase lottery tickets convinced that we are going to win a jackpot prize playing EuroMillions, but we realise that this will only happen if luck is on our side. If we do manage to beat the odds and win, benefits include having the freedom to do things that we couldn’t previously afford. We can travel, we can purchase a new house or a new car, but more importantly, we can secure our financial future. If we manage our newfound wealth wisely, we will have find ourselves with a strong sense of wellbeing.

The state of contentment one feels after getting quality sleep is similar to the feeling we have after winning a nice prize in the lottery. If the prize is in the hundreds of millions of dollars, we would probably go crazy and not know what to do with ourselves. But if we were to win a modest lottery prize, say £200,000, we would certainly find ourselves being comfortable, healthy, and happy, exactly as Dr Tang concluded.

Getting enough sleep is essential to our health but if we get too much sleep, we won’t accomplish much. Winning the lottery will be helpful to our finances but we must take care not to spend beyond our means. If we are sleeping well and just happen to win the lottery, we will have the best of both worlds!
