IS IT THE RIGHT TIME TO BECOME A PARENT?

You might be wondering if it is the right time for you to become a parent. When you are considering growing your family, you are likely to face a lot of questions that you are not sure how to answer.

To put it bluntly, there isn’t going to be a right answer to this question. Nor is there going to be a right time to have a baby. However, there are some mental, emotional, physical, financial and practical things that you may want to consider before embarking on this journey.

Becoming a parent is a deeply personal journey that you and your spouse will embark on together, so it will take a collaborative effort to decide if it is the right thing for you to do and when to do it.

To help you on your journey, here are some practical things to consider that might play into your decision.

#1 Financial stability

Importantly, finances are going to be a huge factor in becoming a parent. You not only have to feed yourself and your partner, but you will be bringing another human into the family. This doesn’t just mean baby food; it also means supplements, nappies, toys, a cot, education, babysitters, medical costs, and more. You need to know that you can comfortably live.

#2 Mental and emotional capacity

Having emotional and mental capacity before having a baby is crucial to consider. You need to be able to manage your stress and anxiety, be able to communicate openly with your spouse, practice self-care, and more. Having a baby is going to be a whole new challenge that you have never faced before. It is therefore vital that you are in a good place before bringing another human into the world. They are like sponges and will soak up everything. You want to be able to properly look after your children

#3 Biological factors

Getting pregnant is the most common way to bring a baby into the world, but it isn’t the only way. When considering having a baby, you will want to consider the health, well-being and fertility of both yourself and your spouse. This will help you consider if biologically you are ready and what steps you need to take to support you on your journey. Many couples find that there are fertility issues. This does not mean you are not ready, but it might mean seeking support from a fertility clinic to help you on your journey.

#4 Relationship stability

Many people have a deep desire to have a baby, without thinking about the current and future state of their relationship. You want to be teammates and know that you can rely on each other during what will be a very bumpy and challenging journey. Can you trust your spouse? Will your spouse show up for you in your time of need? Does your spouse meet your needs? Does your spouse want the same things as you? Are you and your spouse able to openly communicate? How do you both engage in repair after an argument? These are really important things to consider.

Bringing a baby into the world is very complex. Consider these things to help you decide if it is the right time for you.
