The Ordinary Moments | Half Term: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

half term

Well, that’s half term done and it has been challenging to say the least! Our boy has really been pushing the boundaries with his behaviour, last weekend and the early part of the week was pretty awful. Monday was probably my worst parenting day, ever. I’m talking answering back to everything, laughing at me when I told him off (which is the most irritating thing!), hurting his sister, refusing to do anything we asked, tantrums, I could go on…

I think it’s the lack of structure and routine that the school holidays bring, but having said that I’ve never know the school holidays to be as bad as this.

Also, Max tends to get obsessive with certain things, such as Shopkins and when he’s caught up in one of these little obsessions he’s actually much easier to handle because his mind is occupied. But recently he hasn’t been as interested in his Shopkins and I’m wondering if that’s played a part in his behaviour, as it’s meant he’s had nothing to focus his energy on.

Tuesday had it’s ups and downs but luckily by Wednesday things picked up a lot and we’ve actually had some really lovely moments together.

On Wednesday we had some errands to run and I found that by letting Max write out our shopping list before we headed to the shops, it helped him to focus on what we needed to do.

Thursday was a trip to IKEA, which the kids love. My mum and sister came with us too so it was a pretty stress free day for me.

Friday was another really nice day. We spend some time at home, relaxing and reading some books together. Later we headed out to do some bits and bobs, we had a look at the animals in Pets at Home which the kids love doing! Luckily by this point the Shopkins fascination seemed to have returned so I was able to bribe him with them!

The weekend has so far been pretty easy, thanks to my mum having the kids overnight on Saturday which allowed us to have some much needed child free time!

As tough as some days can be, I have to remind myself that not every day is like that and there will be good days right around the corner. It’s also perfectly normal to some days count down to your kids bedtime and then sink a bottle of wine, yes? 😉

How has your half term been?

Thanks for reading.

I’m sorry Max’s lack of routine has caused him to misbehave. I know how difficult it can be. My girl seems to cope ok without routine until it comes to leaving the house, then she’s a nightmare. It’s probably one of the reasons while we have spent most of the half term cooped up inside.

I like to think I am a positive parent and appreciate the good in most days and our half term was actually really good (although it was last week) but I say yes it is totally normal for some days to count down the seconds till bedtime. And hey maybe they make us appreciate the better ones more! x

Its totally OK to count the minutes to bedtime. Sometimes being a parent is the toughest job in the world. Routine is key for us too and although mine are getting that little bit older we still have a pretty solid routine which work for us x hopefully max will be glad to get back to school and routine too.
Ps I’m sure I never drank this much before becoming a parent ?

Firstly you have a lovely home! Second you are obvs an amazing mummy and I am sorry its been a naff week at times… Know that Ethan is 6 and his behaviour is very similar, and so it could be that age of boy thing too. Obviously you know Max, but Ethan does scratch/hit his sister if she doesn’t do as he says and has laughed in my face too and hit me when I tell him off for things- its so hurtful and makes you feel so rubbish, but I think its their age too… its flipping annoying whatever is the reason!
Glad it got better xx #ordinarymoments

    I love your sofa.

Just remember, this too will pass. Some days are worse than others but it won’t last forever x

Half term can be super hard sometimes and our plans usually get thrown out of the window. The bad moments definitely do pass though x

Your sofa and wallpaper is beautiful! The lack of routine really messes with the children during holidays and ours turn into demons at times – but there are lovely moments too. I agree – we have to focus on those positives! x

Parenting is H.A.R.D. I have had more than my fair share of shit days, I think they mostly balance out in the end though. I adore your wallpaper xx
