HOW TO PLAN A CANADA ROAD TRIP

So you’re thinking about heading to Canada for a road trip of a lifetime? But you’re not sure where to start with the planning. Look no further! Although I myself haven’t been to Canada, we have done a similar style road trip in the US, so I have plenty of knowledge and experience to share.

Here’s everything you need to know about planning your Canada road trip…

Decide where in Canada you would like to go

Canada is a big old country and you’re unlikely to be able to see all of it. Of course it depends on your budget and how long you are planning to spend in the country. But for a shorter trip you might be better to stick to one territory. Make a list of the places you would most like to visit and come up with a realistic plan.

Plan your route

Once you know the main places you would like to visit in Canada, you can begin to plan your route. There are websites that will generate a route for you in a matter of seconds, which might work for you. Personally, I think I would rather do this myself to ensure I travelled along a scenic route and had the option to stop off at points of interest along the way.

Vehicle hire

First of all you need to decided what sort of vehicle you will need. You might consider a camper van, that you will live in throughout your trip. This is a good option if you are on a tight budget. Or maybe a car if you are booking separate accommodation during your trip. Whatever option you choose, you can search online for the best deals on vehicle hire. Car hire from Vancouver will be ideal if you are flying in to Vancouver airport, it’s a great location to begin your trip.

When will you visit?

You should carefully consider the time of year that you would like to visit Canada. Canada gets very cold and has a lot of snow fall in the winter months so obviously this wouldn’t be the best time for a road trip. Early or late summer would be a good option as tourist spots shouldn’t be too busy and the weather will be warm, but not hot. As soon as you know when you are taking your trip you can start thinking about packing.

Book flights and accommodation

Now that you’ve got your itinerary sorted, it’s time to start finalising the details of your trip. You’ll need to book flights, accommodation, travel insurance and exchange currency. It’s also important to check whether you need a visa. This all depends on where you are travelling from, but if you are in the UK you won’t usually need a visa but you will require an eTA. It’s really important that you cover all these bases or you’re trip could be ruined.

Consider Working holiday in Canada

Considering a working holiday in Canada, especially during the Canada Ski Season, alongside your road trip can elevate your adventure. It provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in Canadian culture, earn some income, and  extend your stay. Whether you want to spend a few months exploring the stunning landscapes or experiencing city life in places like Vancouver or Toronto, a working holiday visa opens doors to unique experiences. You can fund your road trip while meeting locals, making new friends, and gaining a deeper understanding of Canadian life. It’s an enriching way to make the most of your visit while adding a meaningful dimension to your journey.
