TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR NEXT MOTORHOME ROAD TRIP

So you’re thinking about taking a road trip in a motorhome, but you’re not sure where to start with planning your trip. Perhaps you’ve never travelled in a motorhome or camper before and need all the tips and advice you can get. Well, look no further! In this article we’ll cover everything you’ll need to consider when planning your dream road trip.

Choosing your motorhome

Maybe you already own your own camper, but if not you will need to hire a motorhome. I highly recommend checking out camper sharing, which is a similar idea to Air B&B, where owners hire out their vehicle. Yescapa is Europe’s largest camper sharing platform, with around 12,500 vehicles across Europe. At Yescapa you’ll find many different types of vehicles from smaller converted vans, to spacious A class motorhomes which may be better suited to families. Once you’ve found your perfect motorhome, you can make a booking request, when this is confirmed by the owner you can start planning your adventure! When you pick up the vehicle, you’ll pay a security deposit, sign the rental contract and agree a return time with the owner. It couldn’t be easier!

Choosing a destination

You may already have a destination in mind, but if not there are so many possibilities. Start by doing a little online research, Instagram and TikTok are great for travel inspiration and van life content.

You should consider the type of weather you’re hoping for too. If you’re hoping for sunshine and heat, this could help narrow down your destination list. But remember, at this point you could simply decide on the country you want to visit, you don’t need to be any more precise than that. Once you get into planning your itinerary, that’s where you will get into more detail and decision making.

Plan your itinerary

So you’ve decided on a destination, now you need to plan your stops and route. Your online research should have given you some ideas of places you’d like to visit, so start with these. There are online route planners that you can play around with here for inspiration. This is the fun part though, so enjoy the process and make changes if you need to. That’s the beauty of a camper holiday – you’re free to go wherever you want!

Campsites

Now that you have your route planned, you will need to look at possible campsite options. If you’re travelling in summer, it’s important to book these in advance as they can fill up very fast. Make sure you research properly, and look at online reviews for each campsite, because there’s nothing that will ruin your trip quite like a bad campsite.

If you have children, you might want to consider campsites with playgrounds, swimming pools and other entertainment. Or maybe something more basic if you’re on a tighter budget. There are many options to weigh up here.

What to take with you

First off, you’ll need to pack your clothes, and while this may seem obvious, there are some slight differences when packing for a motorhome holiday. It’s a good idea to take as few clothes as possible, so that storage isn’t an issue in your motorhome. This means hand washing and taking advantage of onsite laundry facilities wherever possible.

Aside from clothing, you’ll need to pack cooking equipment, cleaning supplies, toiletries and entertainment such as games. You could start by making a list of everything you would use at home on an average day. Do this well in advance so that you can keep editing your list over time, adding or removing items as needed.

Once, you’ve been on your very first motorhome trip, you’ll learn exactly what you need and don’t need. This will allow you to create the perfect road trip packing list ready for your next adventure!

Have you ever been on a motorhome road trip? If not, is it something you are considering?
