HOW TO PREPARE FOR A MARATHON

If you’ve landed on this page, you’re probably about to embark on your first ever marathon, or you’re at least thinking about it. As a runner myself, I know it’s something I’ve often considered. A marathon is a huge achievement but it can take a toll on your body, so it’s important to train properly and make sure you are set up with all the correct running gear. Read on for five ways to prepare for a marathon…

1. Choose a marathon

First things first, you’ll need to decide which marathon you would like to run. Many people aim for the London Marathon, but it is difficult to get a place and it may involve a lot of travelling depending on where you live. If you live in the north of England the Manchester Marathon is a great alternative and places although limited are easier to get than the at London Marathon.

2. Training

Training is essential for anyone preparing to run a marathon. You should start your training six months to a year before the event. Your training should consist of easy runs, long runs and tempo runs. You should expect to be running at least three times per week. You will need a proper plan set out for you to follow, you can make this up yourself or there are plenty of free resources available online.

Your training should also include other forms of exercise such as cross training and strength training. Strength training is important for any runner as it helps strengthen your muscles and joints and decreases your risk of picking up an injury. Walking is another great addition to your training plan. But make sure you are wearing the correct womens walking boots, as you don’t want an injury before race day!

3. Fuelling your runs

Learning how to properly fuel your runs will take some trial and error and can be different for everyone. You will of course need water with you on Marathon day, and during your longer training runs. You’ll also need energy from gels or similar. Some people do struggle to stomach these whilst running, so you will need to test out different products to see what works best for you and your body. But it’s important not to skip this part or you’ll likely not be able to finish the race.

4. Footwear and clothing

The correct footwear and clothing is really important when running any race. You should first get a gait analysis done at a specialist running shop, to ensure you choose the correct shoes for you. There are different types of trainers available for different types of running, for example you may need womens trail running shoes depending on where you do you training runs. Race day shoes will be different, so it’s important to do your research.

You’ll also need comfortable clothing that you have tried and tested ahead of race day. You don’t want to end up with clothes that ride up, or down because having to readjust whilst running will be very distracting. I’ve had this problem with leggings many times, but thankfully have now found the perfect pair.

5. Recovery

Proper recovery is just as important as the running itself. Whilst training, you should ensure you are allowing enough recovery time between runs to avoid getting injured. Many people choose to use massage guns after their runs. You could also invest in an ice bath, which is great for muscle recovery.

Are you planning to run a marathon soon? I hope this post has been helpful to you and good luck!
