As you may know, we moved into our new home last year and we become the owners of a huge garage/workshop. We believe that the previous owner had built this himself and let’s just say it needs a bit of TLC. So we have been looking at ways to make the most of the space, and spruce it up a little. At the end of the day a garage is a great place to store things so it needs to be utilised with plenty of garage shelving and storage. A garage can also be a pleasant space that you don’t mind spending time in. It could even be an ideal gym space with just a few updates.
Read on to see how you can upgrade your garage without breaking the bank…
1. Update your garage door
An ugly garage door will do nothing for your homes curb appeal. If you have the available budget you could install a brand new door. Or, if you are on a tight budget you could upgrade your existing door, which is exactly what we decided to do. A lick of paint can completely transform your garage door. Make sure you use the correct type of paint and sand the surface well beforehand.
2. Storage
Storage is a big one when it comes to garage space. There are lots of clever ideas such as slide out ceiling storage, Pinterest is a great place to look for ideas. I don’t know about you but we have all sorts in our garage – pet food, tools, a lawn mower, garden furniture, the kids memory boxes and even a trampoline that we have yet to put up! 3. New flooring
Another way to improve the look of your space it to install new flooring. Ideally you want something hardwearing in a garage, so epoxy could be a good option. Alternatively you could look at vinyl flooring which is cheap and easy to install yourself without having to hire a professional.
4. Add electricity
Unfortunately you will find that most detached garages don’t have power in them. When we first moved in here our garage just had a dodgy extension lead coming from the house, which is definitely not safe! So we had a professional come and install electric properly. Now we have light and power sockets for whatever we need to use in there. We have our tumble dryer in the garage, as there wasn’t room in the kitchen, so adding power was very important for us.
5. Insulation
Insulation is super important in any garage, but particularly a detached one that will be getting no heat from the house. You could just insulate the back of your door, or add insulation board to all the walls and then get them plastered. There’s also wool or fiberglass insulation, or even spray insulation. There are many different options, all dependent on your budget.
6. A lick of paint
A lick of paint can make a huge difference in a garage space. Ours is currently grey breeze blocks that are very unappealing. I will definitely be painting these white, just to brighter and freshen up the place a little. This will definitely help the space become somewhere that we actually enjoy spending time in, rather than avoiding going in at all costs!
