GOLF ESSENTIALS – A BEGINNERS GUIDE

So you’re thinking about getting into golf but you’re not sure where to begin. There’s several things to consider when it comes to equipment and it can get costly, so it’s important to do your research and only buy what you really need.

Let’s take a look…

Golf clubs

As a beginner to the world of golf there’s generally just a few golf clubs that you will need – a driver, fairway wood, a putter, sand wedge, pitching wedge and a 7, 8 and 9 iron. As you gain more experience you may find that you want to add more to your kit but as a beginners, these will serve you well.

Some golf courses do hire out equipment which is handy if you’re not quite sure whether you want to take the the plunge into buying your own clubs yet. Always check with your local golf course first though as this isn’t standard for all courses.

Footwear

As a beginner you might not want to invest in a pair of golf shoes right away, and that’s ok. A decent pair of trainers will likely be fine to wear when you are starting out. But as you progress you may eventually want to get yourself some golf shoes. Golf shoes are generally waterproof and stop you from slipping on uneven ground. You can either have them with spikes or without, this comes down to personal preference and the course and conditions that you usually play in.

Clothing

Similarly to footwear, proper golf clothing is not a necessity when starting out but may be something you choose to invest in as you become more familiar with the sport. The clothing you choose depends on time of year, weather conditions etc. Golf enthusiasts will tell you that waterproofs are always an essential especially here in the UK as the weather can be very changeable.

Golf bag

There are a few different options when it comes to golf bags such as carry bags and stand bags. Stand bags are generally a preferred option because as the name suggests they have an inbuilt stand which makes it easy and convenient to grab your golf clubs without having to bend over.

A smaller sized, lightweight bag is a great option for a beginner as you likely won’t have too many clubs to carry around. There’s lots of options available with prices starting from around £100. You could also consider buying second hand as there are some real bargains to be had.

Golf trolley

While you don’t technically need a golf trolley, they can be very useful. Carrying around a golf bag can be difficult as they are heavy and you are out on the course for quite a long time generally. So a trolley will make this much easier. Trolleys are particularly useful for older golfers or anyone with back problems.

If, however, you tend to use a golf buggy on the course then there really is no need to invest in a trolley.

I hope that this post has helped. Feel free to add your own tips and advice in the comments. Happy golfing!
