GOLF SIMULATORS: HOW CLOSELY DO THEY MATCH REALITY?

If you’re getting into golf seriously, you’ll likely understand that you need to practice to get better. You might be very casual about the game, but it still feels good to beat your buddies when you get out on a public course. Having those bragging rights feels fantastic, and getting compliments because you’ve improved your game can give you a swagger that might last for days.

To that end, you might want to check out some of the golf sims near you. If you’ve never tried one out, though, you might be uncertain about how closely they match the reality of playing on an outdoor course.

What is a Golf Simulator?

First, let’s make sure you understand what we mean when we use this term. Usually, when someone talks about a golf simulator, what they mean is an indoor facility that uses state-of-the-art technology. It’s a setup where you can practice your swing or putting by playing virtual rounds in a completely simulated environment.

What you’re doing is combining the use of physical golf gear, like clubs, balls, and hitting mats, with software and tracking devices that perfectly imitate what would happen if you were engaged in the same action on an outdoor course. A screen in front of you tracks the ball’s trajectory.

What’s Different Between a Golf Sim and the Real Thing?

So, how close is a golf simulator to playing golf on an outdoor course? That’s subjective, of course, but most golfers agree that the effect is pretty realistic, especially with the technology available now. What this type of simulator looks like in modern times is pretty different from what you would have gotten 20 years ago.

Keep in mind that there are still some crucial differences between a simulated round of golf and a real one. The main difference is that when playing simulated golf, you’re presumably doing it in a completely enclosed, climate-controlled setting. You’re likely enjoying the air conditioning, and you don’t have to worry about swirling wind gusts, sudden rainstorms, or actual sand traps.

Is It Beneficial to Use One?

Even removing weather from the equation, though, what you’ll get is a reasonable simulation of the real thing. If you’re getting more serious about golf as a hobby, it can absolutely be beneficial to spend some time working on your game in a simulator.

If you’re having trouble with your drive, for instance, or your putting, spending a couple of hours working on that particular aspect of your game can yield real results when you get back out there on the links. While you might think about installing a golf simulator in your home if you have the space and the money for it, there are often simulators in your neighborhood that you can visit and pay for when you have the time to do so.

The consensus among most players is that golf simulators are potentially highly beneficial to your game if you take the time to learn how to use them.
