Pew Research Center has found that 47% of Americans find dating harder now than a decade ago. In 2024, building your dating confidence might seem more challenging than ever, especially after a bad experience. It takes practice, intention, and endurance.
You wouldn’t expect to get back in shape after going to the gym once. Similarly, you can’t rebuild your dating confidence after a single date that might have gone badly on top of everything. Here are some effective tips to rebuild confidence in dating.
When have you felt most confident in your life?
Think about what your life was like at that point, what you were doing, and who you were with. During what activities do you feel most confident? Is it when you’re physically active, practicing a hobby, or chilling at a café? If the activity is suitable for a first-date idea, suggest it to someone you hit it off with.
If not, try and engage in at least one activity that makes you feel positive before the date.
Create a pre-date routine
A pre-date routine can help you feel confident and calm. Consider any exercises or activities that help you unwind and feel centered. Feeling grounded can help you be fully present on the date and manage any pre-date anxiety. Consider physical exercise, a pre-date song playlist, dancing, or a mindfulness exercise.
Your first time practicing this routine shouldn’t be on the day of your date. Try it when you’re feeling relaxed. That way, your body will associate the exercises with feeling peaceful. You won’t be pressured into trying something brand new when you may already be having first-date jitters.
Reflect on why you lost confidence
Getting cheated on is on most people’s lists of bad experiences and a common reason why the victim of infidelity might lose confidence and be unwilling to date. Signs of cheating include becoming withdrawn, secretive, an increased interest in appearance, and spending more time away from home, often for inexplicable reasons. Victims of infidelity report changes in their partners’ attitudes as well as partners lying and avoiding conversations.
A fifth of men and almost a third of women have confessed to cheating on a spouse. 21% of respondents in a recent survey admitted to having cheated on a partner, up from 5% in the 1960s. Affairs with a coworker account for 30% of new cases of infidelity. Cheating caused 57% of divorces, where almost two-thirds of unfaithful partners did not intend to separate from their spouse before having an affair. However, there are exceptions, and it’s sometimes the case that serial cheaters want to stay married.

A research team found that 42% of Tinder users were seeking dates despite being married or in a relationship. 64% of respondents in their survey said they had seen someone on Tinder whom they knew to be in a relationship. 17% of respondents themselves admitted to messaging someone on the app while in an exclusive relationship, and approx. 7% said they’d had a sexual experience with someone they met on the app while dating another person.
One of Tinder’s features lets people block contacts of individuals they wouldn’t want to encounter while trying to find a date, such as exes, coworkers, or relatives. This feature has the potential to make Tinder safer for unfaithful people who don’t want to get caught. If you were cheated on, understand it wasn’t your fault, and it happens to a lot of people. Move on.
Imagine how you want to feel on a date
Research has shown that visualization can help improve confidence and athletic performance. While imagining how you want to feel on a date doesn’t always ensure a particular outcome, it does increase the probability of having a confident mindset.
Know your relationship needs
When you’re aware of your relationship needs, it’s easy to see when someone is not compatible with you. Think about why someone would be happy to date and get to know you. Consider your strengths and any positive feedback you’ve gotten. Ask friends or family members what they think your strengths are. Make a list of your strengths and review it before each first date. It can do a lot for your confidence.
