Whether you’re a complete beginner when it comes to hiking, or you’re simply looking to upgrade your current equipment, you’ll find must have hiking gear for 2024 right here. From smart watches to footwear, we’re sharing tried and tested products that will help you get the most of your hike.
Smart watch
There are so many smart watches out there these days, it can be hard to know where to start. Of course if you want a good all rounder then the Apple Watch or Fitbit could be perfect for you. But if you are looking for a hiking specific watch then Garmin are a great brand to look at. Garmin watches come with built in, accurate GPS and a battery life that beats most other smart watches, hands down.
Footwear – adidas Free Hiker
In terms of footwear, the adidas Terrex Free Hiker definitely needed a category of it’s own. These hiking shoes offer the comfort and style of a trainer, but is durable enough for even the toughest of trails. These shoes are breathable but also waterproof and maintain their grip whether they are wet or dry. Aside from how practical these shoes are for trail walking, they also look great. A lot of traditional hiking boots leave a lot to be desired when it comes to style, but the adidas Free Hiker look great. Available in various styles and colourways, the Free Hiker is a must for any hiker.

Clothing
Clothing will vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions, that goes without saying. But whatever the weather, you should always carry a waterproof jacket with you. Especially in the unpredictable Great British weather! The North Face is a good brand to consider when looking at jackets. The quality is amazing and will last you for many years. If you’re on a tighter budget, check out Blacks who often have great deals and sales on.
Backpack
A good quality backpack is a must for any regular hiker. This will carry all of your essential equipment, plus food and drink. The size of your bag will depend on what you are using it for. Obviously the longer the hike, the more equipment you will need and therefore the bigger your bag will need to be. Berghaus is a brilliant brand to look at for hiking backpacks. The Berghaus Twentyfourseven 30 litre backpack is the perfect starter bag for beginners.

Trekking poles
You may or may not need need trekking poles, depending on where you are hiking. If you’re hiking over steep or rough terrain or through water then trekking poles can be a big help. They are also great if you’re carrying a particularly heavy backpack, as they can help you to keep your balance.
Prices vary when it comes to trekking poles, but in my opinion they don’t need to cost the earth. Mountain Warehouse and Decathlon have some very reasonably price options. I would suggest looking at folding poles as these can easily be packed away in your bag whenever you aren’t using them.
First aid kit
Finally, never head out on a hike without a first aid kit! This is an absolute essential no matter how much experience you have with hiking. Accidents can happen at any point and to anyone so make sure you are prepared with the right kit.
