Did you you know that many of us are paying for broadband speeds that we simply aren’t receiving? This could be for many reasons, but the place to start is by checking your internet speed. You can do this by following the simple steps I have outlined below.
So what actually is an internet speed test? Well, it’s exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a simple test that you can run online to check what broadband speeds you are actually getting. Your speeds may differ throughout the day so it’s important to check at different times of day to get an accurate picture.
Why run a speed test?
You may be finding that your internet is running really slow and want to find out why. It could be a problem with your computer or your internet connection. Once your know what speeds you are getting, you can then work to resolve the issue with your internet provider.
With many of us now working from home, internet speed is more important than ever. If there is a problem then it needs to be resolved as quickly as possible. Running a speed test may show you at what times of day your internet speed is faster and slower. This will allow you to schedule things such as Zoom calls for when your internet is performing at it’s best.
1. Get ready
Before you run an internet speed check there’s a few things you will need to do first. Firstly, shut down anything that uses the internet and stop any current downloads. Ensure that you are as close to your WiFi router as possible and that there are no big objects in the way.
2. Run the internet speed test
There are a few different internet speed test websites but the one that I use and would recommend is Speedcheck. Simply click ‘start test’, the test will take just a few seconds to complete. You will then be able to see your download and upload speeds.
3. Understanding your results
Once you have finished running your speed test, you will be able to see your results. Like I mentioned earlier it’s a good idea to check your speeds a few times, at different times of day to get an accurate picture. Once you have this, you should speak to your internet provider and ask them why you aren’t receiving what you are paying for. Usually they will have 30 days in which to resolve the problem for you.
