Addiction can take over your life if you don’t have a recovery plan in place. Living a balanced life requires understanding the sacrifices necessary to stay clean. The 5 stages are only the beginning, so it is up to you to stay on the right path.
1. Acknowledgement
Before you check into rehab facilities in San Diego, acknowledging an addiction is necessary. Without admitting there is a problem, you run the risk of making a bad faith effort towards recovery. Getting through the recovery stages can fail when you don’t believe there is an actual problem. This lack of self-awareness explodes when you are met face to face with the consequences of your actions. Resolve your denial, and the first stage of addiction recovery will officially begin.
2. Commitment
There is no way to get through recovery without a firm commitment. It is easy to go into relax mode during the recovery period, especially when the weight of the initial denial is lifted from your shoulders. This is not the time to relax! Commitment to change is an evolving process that will put multiple obstacles in your path. Before you can overcome addiction, there has to be a strong resolve in your judgement that is not weak to wavering.
3. Motivation
What motivated you to go through the recovery process? For some addicts, being with their family is a strong enough bond to be a motivator to defeat addiction. That love is the shining light at the end of the tunnel that makes the struggles of recovery worthwhile. Whatever your motivation, it has to be something that has a special personal meaning. No two motivations are the same, so try not to latch onto someone else’s strength. Your motivation for overcoming addiction is special, and can be the driving force in seeing it through to the end.

4. Making A Plan
Multiple goals are the key to a good recovery plan. This part of the recovery stage marks an incredible opportunity to ‘write a journal’ about your achievements. Being able to see progress is just as important as getting through the ultimate goal of recovery. These short victories are what keeps your mental health in good enough shape to power through the difficult stages. Be specific with goals, and treat them with the same respect as the final recovery goal.
5. Maintaining Change
Addiction recovery takes effort, even after going through the final hardship. There are plenty of challenges afterwards to stay clean. In order to maintain your final change, treat the final stage of recovery as a new healthy balance in your life. Staying away from addictive substances isn’t a restriction, or a punishment. You are taking a different path and choosing a strong body and mind over a quick fix in life. This is an important role to master in the final stage of recovery, and one that will make you see progress as an important change.
The Finish Line
The 5 stages of recovery can be tough, but the end result will change your life forever. Never give up, and seek support when you feel like things are getting out of hand. There are challenges, but they are easy to overcome with the right mindset.
