PREPARING FOR PREGNANCY | THINGS TO CONSIDER

So you’re thinking about starting a family and you want to make sure that you have a healthy pregnancy and give your baby the best start in life. While sometimes things can go wrong through no fault of our own, there are certainly things that we can do to give a pregnancy the very best chance of being successful.

Read on to find out more…

General health

You should first ensure that your general health is good before you consider getting pregnant. This includes eating a healthy, balanced diet and exercising regularly. You may want to consult your doctor for a general health check to make sure there are no underlying health concerns. Ideally you should be of a healthy weight too as being overweight does carry risks in pregnancy such as gestational diabetes and pre eclampsia.

Financial and personal circumstances

Having a baby can put stress on every aspect of our lives. Relationships, finances, you name it. So it’s important to make sure you are in the best possible position before starting a family. Do you have a strong relationship with your other half? Do you have a good support system around you? Don’t forget that babies can be very expensive, so make sure that you are financially stable. Consider your maternity leave pay and what your plans for childcare costs will be in the future.

Trying to conceiving

For some people getting pregnant happens very quickly, but for others it can take several months. It’s important to not get too stressed about how long it’s taking as this can make things even harder, and add extra pressure to your relationship. You could try using ovulation tests, which will tell you exactly when you are ovulating – therefore giving you best chance of falling pregnant.

Fertility treatment

Following on from the last point, if after a while you still aren’t getting that positive pregnancy test, it could be time to see a specialist and consider fertility treatments. You will first be referred for tests to find out what the problem is and how it can be treated. There are lots of different fertility treatment options available, one of which is IVF. The cost of IVF in the UK varies so it’s important to do some researching into this and find a reputable provider with all inclusive IVF prices. IVF has very high success rates, so try not to worry if this is the path you find yourself on.

Take vitamins and supplements

To ensure you are as healthy as you can be during your pregnancy you should eat a balanced diet, but in addition to this you should be taking a folic acid supplement. Folic acid helps the body make new cells and DNA, which is of course very important when you’re growing a human! There are some great all in one supplements on the market now that contain folic acid plus other important vitamins like vitamin b, vitamin d and omega 3.
