If you’ve ever been caught mid-change with no wipes, a wriggly baby, and an emergency poo-situation brewing – you’re not alone.
Parenting comes with plenty of challenges, but nappy changing is right up there as one of the trickiest and messiest to master.
There’s also the part of nappy changing that doesn’t get talked about enough – what all that mess can do to your baby’s skin. Even when you’re doing everything right, that constant exposure to moisture can quickly lead to soreness and irritation.
Why nappy rash is so common – and how to help
New research by Colief has revealed that nearly 80% of babies experience nappy rash at some point, but only one in four parents use a preventative product at every change. Sometimes you just don’t think about prevention when you’re in survival mode. When you’re trying to get through the day on four hours’ sleep, prevention isn’t always at the top of the list.
But midwife Angie Willis reminds parents that a few small changes can make a big difference: “Over half of all babies will experience nappy rash at some point within the first two years, and whilst this is common, knowing how to prevent and manage it will help provide comfort to your little one. Nappy rash can appear as a red, spotty, or inflamed area around the groin and buttocks, and in severe cases may cause broken skin.
“Prolonged exposure to poo and wee is the most common cause of nappy rash; however, it can also be triggered or exacerbated by other allergens, either ingested or in direct contact with the skin. Once the skin has a nappy rash, infection can become more common, as bacteria, viruses, or candida (thrush) can enter the broken skin areas.”
The nappy-changing juggle
The Colief study also found that one in three parents have been caught out mid-change by a rogue wee or poo, and a quarter have forgotten spare nappies (we’ve all been there). Changing in public comes top of the stress list, with restaurants and public transport rated the worst places for a change.
Only 16% of parents said they feel confident changing on the go, and it’s easy to see why. Trying to keep your little one still on a fold-down changing table in a tiny loo should be an Olympic event.

A new, fuss-free way to protect baby’s skin
That’s where Colief’s Nappy Care Spray comes in.
It’s a spray on, touch-free alternative to the thick creams we all know (and get under our nails!). Formulated with Hypochlorous Acid (HOCI), a gentle, naturally occurring antimicrobial, it helps clean and protect against bacteria and fungi, like Candida, while being suitable from birth.
Because it’s alcohol-free, fragrance-free, and petroleum-free, it’s perfect for sensitive skin. It’s dermatologically tested and provides up to 333 uses per 150ml bottle – ideal for when you’re changing nappies several times a day.
It’s so easy to use – just a few quick sprays and you’re done. No sticky residue and no rubbing required.
A few lessons learned along the way
After babies, a few public poonamis, and countless outfit changes (for both of us), I’ve learned a few simple tricks:
Always pack spare clothes – for you, not just baby
Keep a mini emergency kit in the car for surprise changes
Bring distracts – a toy or snacks
Restock your changing bag before you leave the house
Parenting isn’t about perfection – it’s about surviving the messy bits with a smile (and lots of wipes). If you’re looking for an easier, gentler way to protect your baby’s skin, Colief Nappy Care Spray is well worth a place in your changing bag.
The Colief Nappy Care Spray is available now on Amazon (£11.99).
