USEFUL DIY AND HOME SKILLS EVERY CHILD CAN LEARN

Teaching children DIY and home skills from a young age can help them become more independent, confident and prepared for adult life. Here are some useful abilities that are appropriate for children to learn.

Basic Tool Knowledge

Familiarising kids with basic tools from around age 5 is a good starting point. Go through the names and purposes of tools like hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, tape measures, etc. Show them how to use child-safe versions and supervise them practicing with soft materials like wood blocks. Stress the importance of using tools properly and safely. Let them help with minor tasks like hammering nails into a piece of scrap wood. Their tool skills will gradually improve.

Cooking and Baking

If you are fostering with an agency like Orange Grove Foster Care, the kitchen is an ideal place for children to pick up valuable life skills. Baking is a fun activity that teaches measuring, following directions and using appliances safely. Start simple with cookie dough or decorate cupcakes with supervision from around age 4. By ages 8-12, kids can learn to prepare basic meals like sandwiches, salads and pasta. Teach them to use knives appropriately and follow hygiene rules. Cooking together builds confidence and is great for bonding.

Laundry Basics

Around age 6 or 7, children can start helping with laundry tasks. Show them how to correctly load and unload a washing machine, using detergent and setting cycles. Let them practice hanging clothes on a rack or folding simple items like towels. Ironing under close supervision can be attempted from ages 8-9. Explaining how stains are removed and fabrics washed is educational too. Making laundry a shared responsibility develops useful habits.

Minor Maintenance

Simple maintenance jobs are ideal DIY tasks to teach. Children can learn to change lightbulbs from a young age with supervision. Fixing small objects with glue or tape helps build problem-solving skills. Painting and decorating projects are fun from around age 8 e.g. painting a fence under guidance. Gardening is also great life skill, where they can learn weeding, planting, mowing lawns and more. These activities teach prudence, responsibility and practical abilities.

Being Handy Around the House

There are many basic DIY jobs children can help with to become more adept and independent. Checking smoke alarms, tightening screws, oiling squeaky door hinges, assembling flat-pack furniture and similar tasks let kids apply and improve their skills under adult oversight. A sense of achievement is gained too.

Sewing and Textiles

Sewing is a handy skill for children to acquire. Start by teaching them hand sewing using embroidery hoops and blunt tapestry needles from around age 6-7. Machine sewing can follow under close direction from age 8-9. Begin with straight lines on soft fabrics like cotton. Let them progress to making simple items like cushions as their dexterity improves. Repairing torn cuddly toys or hemming clothes are also useful lessons.

Helping out with household jobs from a young age allows children to safely build practical abilities, knowledge and confidence. So, start engaging children in basic DIY tasks appropriate to their age. The life skills gained will benefit them enormously.
