So you’re thinking of booking a river cruise? River cruises have grown in popularity in recent years and it’s not hard to see why. It’s a unique and relaxing way to explore some beautiful destinations that you likely haven’t visited before. And there’s many reasons why a river cruise might be a better option for you than a traditional ocean cruise, so let’s take a closer look…
1. Smoother sailing
If you love cruises, but struggle with sea sickness because of the choppy waters onboard an ocean liner, then a river cruise might be for you. The water on rivers is a lot calmer, so sea sickness is much less of a concern. You can also always see land on a river cruise, which is better for those who feel nervous about being out in the middle of the ocean. I’ve personally never been on a cruise, but I know the thought of being out on a ship in the sea makes me feel incredibly nervous.
2. Meet new people
Because river cruise ships have to be smaller in order to fit through narrow waterways, there’s less people onboard, making it easier to meet new people and make friends. Ocean cruise ships are so huge that you could meet someone once and never see them again for your entire trip! River cruises feel much more intimate and friendly in comparison.

3. Different destinations
As river cruise ships can travel inland, they can stop at smaller towns and cities that a cruise liner cannot. These destinations are likely to be quieter and less crowded, particularly in peak summer season. River cruises operate all year round too, so you could even experience some of Europe’s best Christmas markets whilst on a river cruise. This sounds right up my street!
4. Less formal
River cruises are generally less formal than ocean cruises. Ocean cruises have formal evenings that require you to wear suits and evening gowns. Of course, some people very much enjoy this side of cruising, but if it’s not your sort of thing then a river cruise might be for you. River cruises are far less formal and much more relaxed, so casual clothing is expected of guests.
5. No planning involved
When you book a river cruise, you can rest assured that your itinerary is already planned out for you. So if planning every aspect of a holiday is not for you, then a river cruise has you covered! Stress free travel sounds good, right?
