If you’re heading off on your travels this summer, you will no doubt be packing important and valuable items to take along with you. But how do keep your belongings safe and ensure that they do not get damaged, lost or even stolen? Having this happen can ruin your trip and cause a lot of unnecessary stress, so it’s important to take steps to avoid this if possible.

Read on for six things you can do to keep your luggage safe while travelling…

1. Don’t leave your luggage unattended

First and foremost, don’t leave your luggage unattended when travelling. Be vigilant at all times as thieves can be very good at going unnoticed. Airports, train stations and service stations are always hotspots for bag theft so make sure your bag is securely closed and in your line of sight at all times.

2. Invest in good quality suitcases

To avoid any damage to your belongings it’s best to invest in high quality suitcases. Luggage often gets thrown around when being loaded on and off of airplanes so it’s important that your case has a tough, hard shell that will not break under such pressure. Prices can vary a lot but remember that a good quality luggage set could last you for decades.

3. Use a GPS luggage tracker

Protect your luggage by investing in a GPS luggage tracker. Such devices can be placed inside your suitcase and allow you to track where your luggage is at all times. So if your bag does get lost or stolen, you will easily be able to log on to your phone and live track where it is. Clever, right?

4. Use a luggage lock

Using a good quality luggage lock is another great way to ensure your luggage is kept as safe as possible. You can pick up a luggage lock for as little as £5 which will offer you some peace of mind. But better quality locks, offering better security are available and range up to around £100.

5. Zip ties

Luggage zip ties are a good and inexpensive way to keep your luggage safe. They simple tie around your suitcase or bag and have to be cut to be removed. This means you can easily see when your bag has been tampered with. It may not always stop theft from happening, but it can certainly act as a deterrent in most cases.

6. Take out insurance

Finally, make sure you have good insurance cover in case the worst does happen and you lose your luggage. The correct insurance would cover you so that you are able to replace your belongings. Imagine reaching your destination and finding that your suitcase along with all of your clothes and other belongings have been lost. You would have no choice but to buy new clothes and spend potentially hundreds of pounds. At least if you are insured you will have the peace of mind knowing that this will be reimbursed.
