Stunning and incomparable as Ireland is – and justified as any of us would be in declaring we never want to leave – sometimes it’s nice to get a bit of perspective. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, as they say. Besides which, there’s no harm in soaking up a little extra sun in the process.
It is by this mechanism that Ireland has quietly, and collectively, chosen a fair few favourite family holiday destinations. Amongst them, you’ll find a lot of usual-suspect destinations, from the Costa del Sol to the French Riviera. None, though, have quite the same pull for young families than Tenerife, which has quietly become a top choice for Irish families taking their first trip abroad with little ones in tow. Why exactly is it that Tenerife has captured so many hearts and minds, though?
1 – Short and Manageable Flights
One of the leading reasons for which Tenerife is such a winning family holiday destination is convenience. It is astonishingly simple to get to Tenerife from Dublin, just as it is from any major airport in the UK and Ireland. Indeed, the flight itself is just over four hours from Dublin — an ideal length of flight for toddlers, in that it’s long enough to get them to nap but not so long that they’ll get fussy.
2 – Sunshine You Can Count On
And once you arrive at Tenerife, you are greeted with a wall of warm, welcoming weather unlike any other island getaway. It’s practically year-round excellence with respect to sunshine, and an extremely welcome break from Ireland’s unpredictable weather. Tenerife holidays are a safe bet for sun, then, and exactly the kind of predictable stability you want from a holiday designed for relaxation and leisure. Just don’t forget the sunscreen!

3 – Family-Friendly Resorts
Given Tenerife’s wider, global appeal as a family-friendly holiday destination, and its tourist-centric economy, it’ll come as no surprise that the island excels in hospitality. Its resorts are numerous and comfortable, as well as remarkable kid-friendly. It’s not hard to find a decent resort with kids’ pools, playgrounds, creches and other family-assistive all-inclusive options, all of which make your life as parent/chaperone so much easier.
4 – Easy, Relaxed Atmosphere
If you get away from the bustle of the continental breakfast station, and out into the real Tenerife, you’ll find a way of life not too dissimilar from that of back home. Well, apart from the sunshine. And the mountains. And the incredible Canarian wineries, making some of the best wine you’ll ever taste. All of this speaks to a different flavour of a very familiar, laid-back way of living – one that’ll make you feel instantly at home (even if you miss the Murphy’s a smidge).
