UNIVERSITY TIPS: FUNDING SUPPORT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF

University education is extremely important to students in the UK. It will increase your access to job opportunities and will make you more marketable. Universities also give you a chance to grow as a person and meet a diversity of people.

Although university education is essential, its cost can be very high. The government has tried to make university education accessible through various funding options, and one of these is the NHS learning support fund.

What is the Learning Support Fund?

This fund was introduced fairly recently and can help to cover the costs of pre-registration courses. You can use it when pursuing both undergraduate and post-graduate courses. The bursary is meant for students who are looking to study medical degrees such as dental therapy, chiropody, dental hygiene, physiotherapy, nursing, and orthoptics.

In addition to covering the tuition fees for the course, the fund also offers financial support in other areas of difficulty. If a medical student has at least one dependent child under the age of 15, they can qualify for parental support amounting to £2,000.

You can also qualify for this fund if you have a special needs child who is under the age of 17. If a student spends money on travel or accommodation, they can qualify for reimbursements. Students who are eligible for a training grant can also get £5,000 a year from this fund.

Is the NHS Bursary the Same as the Learning Support Fund?

These two education funds are different in a few ways. The NHS bursary is older and is accessible to all students of medical courses. In contrast, the Learning Support Fund is only meant to be used by graduate and undergraduate students who are pursuing medical degrees. Both of these funds are considered grants or bursaries, so they don’t have to be repaid.

Who Can Get the Learning Support Fund?

As mentioned earlier, this fund is only available to medical students who are pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate courses. Therefore, you can’t get it if you intend to venture into foreign language courses or engineering. You also have to be eligible for tuition fees and maintenance from the Students Loans Company, and this may be provided through Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, Student Awards Agency for Scotland, and Student Finance Northern Ireland.

Here are other conditions you must meet in order to get this funding support:

  • You must be actively in academic study or practice learning.
  • You must be living in the UK.

It is worth noting that students who are receiving a part-time salary cannot qualify for this fund. Also, if your current or future employer is willing to pay your tuition, you won’t get the Learning Support Fund.

Conclusion

University in England isn’t free, and medical courses can especially be expensive. If you are planning to pursue a medical course, you should consider applying for the NHS Learning Fund. This grant isn’t meant to be repaid and will cover your tuition fee.

It may also cover other expenses in the institution, including accommodation and transport. If you have a dependent child, the fund may also provide parental support.
