We moved into our new home earlier this year and as much as we love it, some rooms are a little on the snug side. This isn’t really a problem for us but it has meant that we’ve had to be a bit clever with storage. Read on to find out how you can make the most of storage space in a small bedroom…
1. Declutter
First and foremost, if you have a small bedroom you are going to need to declutter so that you have less stuff to find a home for. If you haven’t already read ‘The Life Changing Magic or Tidying’ by Marie Kondo I would highly recommend it. Marie talks you through decluttering and organising so that you only keep the things you really need or that mean something to you. We’re all guilty of holding onto things that we don’t need, to the point that we forget we even have them.
2. Built in wardrobes
Built in closet space is a life saver in smaller rooms. When we moved into our new house all three bedrooms had built in wardrobes that we knew we wanted to keep, as they provide such useful storage space. A built in bedroom closet means that you can use every bit of space you have. Unlike freestanding wardrobes you can use the full floor to ceiling height and won’t be left with any awkward gaps either side of the wardrobe.

3. Under bed storage
Max’s bedroom is a really small box room, so this room has been the most challenging for us. It already had the built in wardrobes which have been great, but we still needed more storage space. So we opted for a bed with storage underneath. The one Max has has two large pull out drawers underneath which gives us plenty of room for toys but also keeps everything out of sight and looking tidy.
4. Wall mounting
In a small room it’s important to give the illusion of space by freeing up as much floor space as you possibly can. So instead of having a bedside table with a lamp on, why not lose the table and have a wall light fitted instead? This is what we did it Max’s bedroom and it works really well. You could also wall mount your TV and even storage units and shelving. There are lots of possibilities.
5. Use wasted spaces
Think outside the box a little. Use wall space as much a possible, use the backs of doors as hanging space, or you could even add a built in desk area with your closet. Not everyone has a spare room to use as a home office, so why not utilise space in a bedroom?
