As we get older it is important to make sure that our homes are as comfortable as possible. Some people will opt to move to a more accessible property, while many understandably wish to stay in their current home. If you choose the latter, it is likely that you will need to make some adaptations to make your home easier for you to move around in. Whether you’re thinking about making changes now, or considering your options for the future, this post has you covered.
A simple guide to making your home more comfortable as you get older…
Storage and organisation
The first thing you should consider is storage and organisation in your home. As you get older it’s more important than ever that you know where everything is, and that your belongings are easily accessible. You also want to make sure that floor space is tidy and clear of things that you could fall over. If you require a walking aid or wheel chair in later life, it’s especially important that walk ways are clear.
Install a stairlift
A stairlift is an essential in later life and helps you to remain in your home when stairs become too difficult for you to manage. Age Co Mobility sell a wide range of stairlifts and other mobility aids that will make getting around your home much easier and help you retain your independence.
Fit a new bathroom
A wet room is a great option when you are getting older and finding getting in and out of a bath or shower difficult. Alternatively, if you would like to keep your bath you could opt for one with a side opening so that you don’t have to climb over the side to get in and out.

Handrails and ramps
You could install a handrail and ramp outside of your property, making it easier for you to get in and out of the house. But you could also consider installing handrails in any places in your home where you feel you may need a little extra support, such as in the bathroom. Check out Access BDD for more.
Rise and recline chairs
It may be worth considering investing in rise and recline chairs. Not only are these really comfortable, but as the name suggests they rise and recline at the push of a button to help getting up and sitting down easier.
Intercom system
Installing an intercom system will allow you to communicate with anyone who comes to your door, without having to get up. It can also allow you to remotely open the door if you wish to let someone inside. A cheaper option would be a wireless doorbell. Although this wouldn’t allow you to let someone into your home, it does mean that you can communicate with any visitors via the doorbell.
