But does that mean that for the general public, you cannot preserve the value of your car or that you should not try?
Not really, and while most cars on the road will lose the majority of their value in the first 3 years, there are some things you can do to help slow this depreciation down and ensure your car is worth as much as possible for as long as possible, especially if you’re planning on upgrading sooner rather than later.

A full service history is one of the best ways to prove your car is well-maintained. It’s like a report card for your car, showing that it has been taken care of and is in good condition. A well-maintained car is worth more than one which has a spotty history or no servicing at all.
Prospective buyers will pay more for a car whose logbook has the service stamps from approved companies. This demonstrates careful and constant care and that you actively prevent small mechanical issues as much as possible.
Maintain Paintwork and Bodywork
First impressions count, and when it comes to cars, those first impressions are made due to how the car looks. If it’s full of scratches and dents, buyers won’t be pleased and are less likely to pay the top price for the vehicle. And in the UK climate, chips and scratches can lead to rust, which impacts the protection the car offers.
By carrying out vehicle paint repairs and removing dents, you’re taking proactive steps to preserve the value of your vehicle for as long as possible. It’s not just about aesthetics, it’s about maintaining the integrity of your car and ensuring it retains its value.
Interiors Matter
No one likes to sit in a dirty car, and buyers won’t be impressed with the remnants of your lunch staining the seats because you didn’t clean them up.
Worn upholstery, stains, and those questionable lingering odours aren’t something to be proud of, and neglecting your interior will seriously harm the value of the vehicle and make it less likely to sell or get a good price.
Preserve Mileage
One of the things people look at when purchasing a car is the mileage. The more miles, the more likely the car will be to have had more repairs or be susceptible to damage if it’s not been well maintained.
While you cannot avoid running up mileage, be mindful of the types of trips you take in the car. Those frequent trips to the shops, for example, that are within walking distance will add up faster than you realise and contribute to increased mileage. Remember, high mileage is the biggest contributing factor to depreciation alongside age, so be mindful when taking to the road.
Stay Ahead of the MOT
Essentially, what this means is getting on top of the issues prior to the MOT, not waiting for the inevitable fail and then fixing things. Take your car in for a service prior to the MOT and get any problems resolved. Or get your mechanic to give it a look over and fix MOT concerns prior to testing. This helps you keep a clean record, especially if you’re selling soon.
