It’s not always easy knowing how to dress for an occasion. Is it casual? Is it formal? Or even smart casual, just to make things even more confusing! We are creatures of habit and reaching for the same old pair of trousers day in, day out is all too easy. But are they right for the occasion? Dressing correctly is incredibly important, because what we wear has a lasting impression on the people we meet. Imagine turning up to a wedding in jeans, or wearing formal trouser for a walk along the beach. You’d certainly stand out, right?
Read on to find out more about different styles of trousers and when they should be worn…
Corduroys
Corduroys are made from thick fabric with a raised texture, so they are perfect to wear during the winter months. Generally cords are worn casually, but they can be smartened up easily with a checked shirt for example. This outfit would be perfect for a smart casual event. Check out mature menswear brand Chums, who sell a great range of trousers to suit all styles and occasions, including cargos.
Cargos
Cargos have become very popular recently, for both men and women. Cargo trousers are available in lots of different colours and are definitely considered casual wear. Khaki is probably the most popular colour, which came from them being worn by British infantry who were able to store things easily in the pockets.
Unlike corduroys, cargos can’t really be dressed up and are much better suited to everyday wear with trainers or other casual shoes.

Chinos
Chinos are a similar cut to formal trousers, but made from cotton twill fabric. Chinos are a great middle ground between formal and casual trousers. Again, these are available in lots of different colours so there’s a pair to suit everyone.
Formal Trousers
Formal trousers are exactly that, trousers for formal occasions. Think weddings, funerals, formal dinners and business events. Formal trousers can be made from many different materials and come in various colours. Generally formal trousers will be a more tailored fit than loose fitting trousers such as jeans and cargos.
Jeans
Jeans don’t need all that much explaining do they? I’m sure we all own a pair of jeans and know that they are most definitely casual wear. Jeans are made from thick denim fabric so they are hard wearing and can last for years before they start to show signs of wear and tear. A great wardrobe staple.
I hope that this post has helped you to find the right pair of pants for the occasion.
Thank you for reading.
