So you’re thinking about getting into running, but you’re not sure where to start. Well look no further! In this post we’ll cover everything you need to consider before you start running. Although running can be difficult, especially at first, the mental and physical benefits far outweigh any negatives. Let’s take a look…
Starting out
Before you begin running, ask yourself why you want to be a runner. If it’s for weight loss, I suggest considering a different activity such as walking or even weight training. Running can burn a lot of energy, which in turn makes you very hungry! I learned this myself, as on the day I have been for a run I could eat a horse! Just don’t try to restrict food while running, it won’t work for long. Instead running should be about your long term fitness goals and health. Running it great for your body and your mental health, so make sure you’re starting this journey for the right reasons.
Consider a running plan
A running plan such as couch to 5k is a great place to start when beginning running. This is how I started out and 18 months on, I still run 5k every week. The plans start you running for 60 second intervals and gradually build up over the course of nine weeks. You can of course take the program at your own pace, taking breaks and repeating runs where you feel you need to. There are other similar plans available too, or you could make up your own plan. But heading out and running a 5k on your first run is just not realistic for most people.

Get some running trainers
The correct pair of womens running trainers is incredibly important. The wrong trainers can cause you a lot of pain and will stop you running before you’ve even got into it. It’s important to go to a store and test out different shoes to see which suit you best. You could also consider gait analysis. This is where your run is looked at by a professional to identify the best footwear for your running style.
Clothing
Clothing is also very important when running. The wrong clothing can irritate you and stop you from reaching your full running potential. When I first started out, I was wearing any old leggings I pulled out of my wardrobe but they kept falling down while I was running. Having to keep pulling them back up while moving was very annoying and made me want to stop on many occasions. I found that drawstring waist leggings work the best for me. They are available from lots of different brands and never ever fall down.
Plan a route
I found it really important, particularly at first to have my exact route planned out. I knew I struggled with hills at first, so I wanted a route that was as flat as possible. I also wanted as few road crossings as possible, because I knew if I had to stop I probably wouldn’t want to start again! Also make sure that your route is safe and well lit, especially if you have to run when its dark.
I hope that this post has been helpful. Good luck with your running journey!
