DOING THE IMPOSSIBLE: HOW TO MAKE DRINKING WATER FUN

We all know we should be drinking more water, but doing so is easier said than done! Keeping your hydration levels can feel like another chore we do because we have to, but with some little changes, it can become something you want to do — even something that is fun!

We’ll go through some creative ways to start enjoying drinking water so you get a little burst of fun with every sip. With these tips up your sleeve, others will start asking you how you manage to drink so much water, and you can share these tricks with them too! Let’s dive in.

Make filling up the bottle exciting

You know that pair of shoes that just goes with everything, so you pull them out time and time again? Having a beautiful reusable drink bottle that makes drinking water easy, is a little like that.

Investing in a stylish, durable water bottle that keeps your water cool and looks good while doing it is an incredibly simple way of getting yourself to drink more water. It’s easy to keep in your bag, in the car or even sling around your wrist if it has a handle or strap, so having water with you around the house, to the office or out on errands become a problem of the past. There’s a reason emotional support water bottles have been trending, and it’s all thanks to how much a cute drink bottle or reusable cup can make you love sneaking in some extra H20!

Spice up H20 with fruit infusions

Let’s be honest, water isn’t the most exciting drink, and can sometimes leave us a bit uninspired. But infusing your water with fresh fruits, herbs, vegetables or even tea can be a great way to switch up flavour and help you cut down on those sugary alternatives. It’s also super simple to do, especially if you have a nice big jug handy.

To infuse your water, simply pick your favourite fruits, herbs, veggies or teas, and add them to your water. If you can leave them overnight, you’ll get a stronger flavour. But in a pinch, muddling some mint, squeezing in some lemon and/or lime and chucking in a handful of strawberries is always delicious.

Infusing your water is also a great way to use up those herbs, fruits and veg that would otherwise go to waste. Cut up oranges, watermelon, apples, peaches, rosemary, mint, sage, thyme, cucumbers and other delicious treats and let them give you a tasty water you’ll be topping up in no time. Even the kids will love infused water, and be begging you for more!

Make drinking water a game

As humans, we naturally tend to do things more if we set ourselves incremental goals or make it a competition, even if it’s just with ourselves. Setting yourself some hydration goals is a good way to increase your water intake, especially if you use fun apps to get you closer and closer to your goal.

For example, instead of saying you’ll drink 2L of water a day, get yourself a 1L drink bottle and say you’ll drink one by lunchtime and another by bedtime. Or, if you have a reusable 500ml bottle, promise yourself you’ll have one finished every 3 hours. You can set alarms or reminders on your phone or smart watch to give you a prod. This is also great to do with kids, even giving them a cup of water and encouraging them to get it down before the next ad break or when the clock strikes a certain time.

If you’re really motivated by competition, try using a water-tracking app that syncs with your friends and family. You can each input each cup or litre of water and see who is truly the most hydrated of the group. To make it even more competitive, you could put a monthly or quarterly prize for the person who finishes their goal the soonest.

Eat your water

Wait… eat your water? Yes! There are so many fruits, vegetables and other foods that are packed full of H20 and can help keep you hydrated. For example, cucumbers, watermelon, pineapple, tomatoes, rockmelon, celery, blueberries and grapefruit are all made up of more than 95% water!

While snacking on fruits and vegetables, or even chowing down on a fruit (or regular) salad will help quench your thirst, there are plenty of other hydrating options out there. Take lightly steamed zoodles for example. Using a veggie spiralizer, make some zucchini noodles, pop them in a little water and steam for a few minutes. It’s a great way to increase your veggies and add hydration to a normally carb-heavy meal. Soups, granita, smoothies, even some homemade ice-blocks are all ideal for adding some H20 to your diet while you eat — plus, they’re delicious!

So it’s a cinch to make drinking water fun and incredibly yummy. All it takes is a little creativity, a tiny bit of planning and you can easily benefit from more water. Amidst this enjoyable journey, it’s crucial to be sure that the water we’re consuming is safe to drink. Unfortunately, water might have contaminated sources, posing potential health risks. Instances like the Camp Lejeune water contamination lawsuit highlight the importance of being vigilant about water quality. By incorporating fun elements into our water-drinking routines, we can simultaneously cultivate healthy habits and ensure our water is free from contaminants. Happy sipping!

I hate drinking just water, I blame the water here it just doesn’t taste nice. I always add some diluted juice to it, to give it some flavour. x
