So you’re wanting to increase your daily step count but you’re not sure how to do it. After all, 10,000 steps a day really is a lot! And if you’re not already in the routine of walking everywhere, it’s quite a challenge to fit that many steps in around your other commitments. In this article we’ll share a few tips that should get you on the right track to increasing your daily activity and hopefully achieving your step goals in no time.
Walk with a friend
A great place to start is to get out for a walk each day with a friend or family member. Having a chat will help pass the time and make your walk more enjoyable, meaning you’re more likely to stick to this new routine. Plus, it’s someone to help motivate you to keep going when you feel like you’ve had enough. Make sure you invest in a good quality pair of walking boots for longer hikes.
Alternatively, if you don’t have someone to go walking with you could listen to music or a podcast. Podcast are a great way to pass the time, and most episodes are the ideal length for a nice long walk.
Home workouts
Home workouts are a brilliant way to get your daily steps in. Whether it’s a treadmill walk or run, a full body cardio workout, or a low intensity walking workout. Walking workouts are one of my favourites to do as they are pretty easy but also get your heart rate up and help you to reach your step goals. You can find lots of walking workouts on Youtube but below is one of my favourites.
Makes small routine changes
You can gain a lot of extra steps each day by making simple lifestyle changes. It might be walking to work instead of driving. Or getting off the bus a stop earlier, so you have a little further to walk. Always choose the stairs over the lift. It’s all about changing your mindset and not just looking for the easier option all the time.

Invest in a fitness watch
One of the best things you can do when trying to increase your step count is to invest in a fitness watch. There are lots of different ones on the market that vary in price. But if you are simply looking to track your steps you could pick one up for as little as £50. A fitness watch will really help motivate you to reach your goals.
Set goals
Once you’ve got yourself a fitness watch and have established an accurate idea of how many steps on average you do per day, you can start to set yourself some goals. Perhaps you’re currently doing around 6,000 steps a day, why not try pushing yourself to 8,000? Try not to jump too quickly to an unrealistic goal as you’ll probably find it too much of a challenge and therefore won’t be able to stick to it. Start small and gradually increase your target.
We hope that you have found this post helpful and you will soon be on your way to getting in your 10k steps per day. Good luck!
