As you may know, we moved house earlier this year and although the process was pretty stressful, we definitely learned a few things along the way. We all want to make moving house as easy as possible, especially when we have children to consider, so here are a few things you can do to ensure your move runs smoothly…
First of all, before you do anything else, hire a skip and have a clear out. This is what we did before we left our old house and we got rid of so much stuff! We had lived in our previous house for 10 years and let me tell you, it’s crazy the amount of stuff you accumulate over the years. Yes it takes time to go through all of your belongings but actually there is something quite therapeutic about decluttering and it will make your move so much easier.
2. Book a removals company
If you can afford to I would highly recommend booking a removals company, rather than trying to move everything yourself. Moving is stressful enough as it is, so take the pressure off wherever you can. A removals company can not only move your belongings but they can also pack everything up for you. So you will be free to get on with all the other things that go with moving house such as cleaning and arranging utilities.
3. Hire out a storage unit
If you are going to have some time inbetween properties, perhaps while you stay with family, you should look at renting a storage unit. And even if you are moving straight into your new property, it’s still something that is worth considering. You could choose to just take the essentials with you to start with, and send everything else to a storage unit. This will give you time to consider where everything needs to go, rather than getting overwhelmed with all of the boxes that surround you. Now Storage self storage offer a range of unit sizes at affordable prices. You can even get a quote online in just a few minutes.
4. Label everything!
This may seem obvious but so many people either forget to label boxes, or just write something generic such as ‘kitchen’ or ‘living room’. You might have five boxes for the kitchen so this doesn’t really help you out when you are looking for the kettle and toaster, does it? Write lists of exactly what is in each box, or better still take a photo and stick it to each box. It may take a little time, but it will save you so much time and stress when you come to unpack in your new house.
5. Start packing as early as possible
I know that this isn’t always possible as sometimes completion dates can be sprung on us at the last minute. But if you do have the luxury of time, start packing as soon as you can. You can keep out your everyday essentials and pack away anything that you don’t need. As I mentioned above, label everything so that if you do happen to need something that’s been packed away, you can easily locate it.
6. Pack a suitcase
This has to be one of my favourite house moving tips – pack a suitcase as if you were going on holiday for a long weekend. Because no matter how organised you think you are, it will take time to unpack at the other end and I can guarantee you won’t be able to find your underwear when you need it. So pack clothes and essentials for the first few days, so that you have them to hand without going digging through boxes.
Have you moved house recently? Is there anything that you found made the process a little easier? Let me know!
