ADDING A DOWNSTAIRS TOILET TO OUR HOME

When we moved into our house we only had the main bathroom upstairs, which is OK but having had a downstairs toilet at our last house we knew it was something we wanted to add if we could. In a house of four people, I feel you really need more than one toilet. We quickly realised that we had the perfect space for this at the end of our kitchen. It wouldn’t take much space away from the kitchen, it would hide the unsightly boiler and we could easily add a doorway from the hallway. So we went for it!

Below is the kitchen when we moved it. The area at the end, where the small window and boiler are, is where we have now added the sanicompact.

We added a stud wall and knocked through from the hallway for access. This had to be done anyway because we had removed the kitchen wall and the steel needed to go all the way through to the front door. Below are a couple of progress pics. It’s hard to believe that we lived here while all this was going on. It feels like a lifetime ago now.

And here’s what we have now…

We had some tiles left over from the bathroom renovation, so it made sense to go with the same colour scheme as we went for in the bathroom. So we have white splash back tiles, pink patterned floor tiles, a grey sink unit and light grey paint. I just love how these colours work together. I think in a small space with minimal natural light like this it was really important to keep the colours as light as possible.

In terms of paint, we went for Farrow & Ball in the colour Ammonite, but we had this colour matched by Decorating Centre Online. I love this colour, it’s such a lovely shade of grey and the same as in our upstairs bathroom.

We also had the boiler in here which I didn’t want to have on display, so we decided to box it in in a cupboard. I love how much better this looks, what do you think? The doors were actually from etsy, the same as the ones in our living room. The seller makes them to your measurements and we were really pleased with the quality and price.

What do you think to our finished downstairs toilet?

Thank you for reading.
