The Ordinary Moments | Back to School

I’m joining in with Katie from Mummy, Daddy, Me this week for The Ordinary Moments. The idea is to capture and share the everyday moments in life, the little things.

This week has been all about back to school for us, and most other parent I think! After an amazing summer it’s back to reality and routine. I’ll miss the sunshine and lazy mornings but it is nice to have a bit of quiet in the house! And Max loves the routine and structure at school.

Max’s first week back has gone really well, he really couldn’t wait to go back. Despite his ASD he actually copes with change really well. To say he has a new teacher, new classroom, new ways of doing things and some new classmates he has coped with it all amazingly well.

Evie also went back to preschool this week but that hasn’t been quite so successful! I’ve mentioned before how upset she gets when I drop her off but I’d hoped that the break might have done her some good, but it hasn’t. She’s doing two full days on a Wednesday and Thursday and both days she was absolutely heartbroken, she clung to me and begged me to take her home 🙁 It’s so upsetting to leave her like that. On her first day they said she had been crying on and off but by the second day she had been fine and she couldn’t wait to tell me about all the fun she’d had.

I think her being upset when I leave her is something I’m just going to have to get used to, as long as I know she enjoys it after that initial cry, I guess I’ll just have to deal with it. Maybe she’ll adjust soon, hopefully. It’s been a long break for her and she’s gone back to a new building and new staff so a lot has changed.

It’s been lovely having cuddles when she gets back from preschool, we’ve really missed each other.

It’s safe to say both kids have been tired out this week. This is what after school usually looks like in our house, iPads and lazing on the sofa!

How has back to school been for you?

It must be so hard having a drop off like that, well done to you for being positive about it. Hopefully that will rub off onto Evie. X #theordinarymoments

Oh that must be so hard to leave her when she’s crying, but I’m glad she seems to be settling quickly and perhaps the tears won’t last too long. I love that Max said he wants to work in Pre-School, he must have really loved it 🙂

My son also has ASD and has done really well this week – he was excited to get back and see his pals. Lots of screen time in the evenings for him as he has been too tired to do anything else , he needs it to zone out for a bit. #kcacols

Glad the first week has gone well in year 1. But not for the crying from your littlest, my eldest did this too and once I persevered and knew she was ok she did soon come out of it, some of them just need time. Although of course that doesn’t make it easier for us mummy’s! X

Oh bless her, I hope she has a better week next week, it is so hard when they get upset when they leave, I have had similar problems with both my girls in the past but luckily they have grown out of it now. And I love his answer to what he wants to be when he grows up- we do the same and my little girl said she wanted to be a spy! 😉 x

Aww bless you boy, what a wonderful ambition to want to be a preschool teacher. I hope year 1 is brilliant for him. Z is liking it so far and I’m hoping he blooms with loving writing (he really doesn’t like it :)). My z was just like your Evie and would bawl so much when i would leave him. It took about one half term and something clicked and then he loved it. I hope Evie does too!

What a lovely way to capture back to school, I wonder how that when I grow up comment will change over the years? #MarvMondays

Must be hard when they have so much change to cope with! Good to see Max is coping so well though. #Marvmondays

Oh its so hard leaving them when they are visibly upset. Our eldest used to get upset in the first few days and weeks and eventually settled into it. It makes you feel awful leaving them like that, but usually they are fine after a while and end up having lots of fun. Hopefully it’ll be the same for Evie once she feels more settled. Its great to hear Max has had a good first week back, it makes such a difference when you know theyre coping well with all the changes. Heres to another great week ahead! Thanks for sharing this on #MarvMondays. Emily
