Before our trip to Edinburgh last week we were researching where to make dinner reservations when we came across Frankenstein Bar. As the name suggests, this is a really unique Frankenstein themed bar that serves impressive looking cocktails and food. As our trip was just before Halloween we thought that this would be the perfect place to book. I knew the kids would absolutely love it.
Here are our thoughts…
Frankenstein Edinburgh
Frankenstein bar is located on the George IV Bridge in the centre of Edinburgh. The bar is decorated as if it were Halloween all year round and even the staff are dressed in spooky costumes. The main attraction at the pub is the animatronic Frankenstein that appears each hour. He is accompanied by spooky music, lights and effects.

Food and drinks
Frankenstein don’t have a huge menu but they do serve pizzas with a range of different toppings, as well as sides and dips. They do also have a charcuterie board for two on the menu which we were excited to try, but unfortunately we were told this wasn’t available. The cocktail menu is impressive with spooky themed drinks such as Corpsey Colada, Espresso Frankentini and the Blood Red Martini.

Our thoughts
When we first entered the bar we were of course impressed by the decorations and overall spooky theme, as we expected we would be. We headed straight to the bar to ask where our table was and we were shown upstairs to our seats. I was quite surprised by how busy it was at 5pm on a Thursday afternoon, there were no free tables at all so booking is essential.
We browsed the menu and decided what we all wanted to eat and my husband went to the bar to order. Unfortunately pretty much everything was unavailable. All we could have was margarita pizza and fries. To be fair, these were served quickly and were delicious but we were disappointed at the limited menu.
At one point a staff member came over to us to tell us that the area we were sat in was reserved by someone else. We had to explain that we had a reservation ourselves. It all seemed a little unorganised, bearing in mind we had made our booking months in advance.

After we had finished our food me and my husband ordered a cocktail each. He had The Black Death and I had a Purple Monster. The bar had run out of the correct glasses for our specific drinks, so we were just given whatever glasses were available, which was fine but it did mean the drinks didn’t look quite as impressive as we’d imagined.
As expected the animatronic Frankenstein came out each hour, so we managed to catch it twice during our visit. This was fun and the kids really enjoyed it.
Overall I would say if you’re in Edinburgh it’s worth visiting Frankenstein Bar but just don’t expect too much. It’s busy, a little chaotic and the food choices were very limited. Booking is essential and considering we were there early on a Thursday, I dread to think what it’s like at peak times. But if you are just there for the cocktails and the Frankenstein theme then I have no doubt that you will enjoy the experience.
Have you been to Frankenstein Edinburgh yet? I would love to know your thoughts.
Thank you for reading.
