There are so any reasons to travel in later life. A lot of us always want to travel but we put it off for various reasons, but as we get older our priorities change and we realise it’s now or never. Maybe you finally have the spare money to travel, or freedom due to less work and family commitments. But before you book that trip, there are some things to carefully consider, and once you’ve ironed out the details you could have the best experiences and create memories that will last for years to come.
1. Planning
In older age, planning becomes even more important when travelling. And, if you’re retired you have more spare time to actually enjoy the planning process. There’s plenty of research to be done into destinations, accommodation and other travel details. Maybe you need to consider your medical needs and accessibility before booking a hotel? Why not start by making a list of non negotiables to ensure all your needs are met when you travel. I always find the more lists, the better! A packing list is another important one as forgetting something such as medication could completely ruin your holiday.
2. Consult your doctor
We all know that as we age, our health can start to decline. Maybe you’ve developed some medical conditions and require regular medication. Before booking any trips you should consult your doctor to discuss your proposed plans and medical needs. Your doctor should be able to give you advice on how to feel your best and get the most out of your holiday.

3. Insurance
As I mentioned earlier, as we age we can start to develop ailments and medical conditions. Even after getting the all clear to travel from your doctor you should always make sure to get the best possible travel insurance for over 65 with medical condition cover. This is so that if the worst happens are you fall ill during your trip, you know that you are covered and will be taken care of no matter your medical needs.
4. Look for discounts
There are many offers and discounts available to older people, so this is definitely something to looking into especially if money is tight. Even just a small discount here and there can add up to more than you might think. Search over 65s travel discounts, or hotel discounts to get started.
5. Packing
Packing becomes even more important as we get older. We are generally less concerned with fashion choices and more focused on comfort. Make sure you are taking enough clothing options for any changes in weather. Comfortable shoes are also really important, especially if you plan on doing some walking activities. Packing medical documents and medication is also extremely important, you really wouldn’t want to forget anything! This is where the early planning stages of your trip come in as you should have made detailed lists to refer back to and check.
6. Consider an RV trip
RV trips are particularly well suited to later-life travelers, as you can go at your own pace. For example, you don’t have to worry about catching flights or arriving at the airport on time, as you’re the one in the ‘pilots seat’ so to speak. Furthermore, they are a completely safe way to get around, especially when you park up overnight at a highly-rated RV Park.
As RV parks allow you to stay for as little (or as long) as you like, this means that you can really make yourself at home during your trip. Finally, this comes with the additional benefit of not dealing with packing restrictions, which means that you don’t have to worry about leaving some of your home comforts behind.
I hope that this post has been helpful to you. Happy travels!
