Plant based milks have become increasingly popular in recent years and not just with those following a vegan diet. There are many benefits to using plant milk instead of cows milk, which we will discuss in this article. But even if you’ve already switched to plant milk, are you using it in your baking? Plant based milks work just as well in baking as dairy milk products, so there really is no reason not to give it a go.
Read on for more information about plant milk and it’s benefits…
Plant milk options
When we think of plant milk alternatives probably the first one that comes to mind is oat milk. Oat milk is very popular due to it’s creamy, rich taste. But there are many other options such as soy milk, almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, pea milk, rice milk, hemp milk and more! All of these products have their own unique flavour so it’s best to experiment a little and see which you like the best. It might be that you prefer one in your coffee, and another on your cereal for example.
The benefits of plant based milk
I made the switch from cows milk a few years ago as I find that dairy products cause IBS flare ups, which is a very common problem and one of the main reasons people switch to plant based milk. Plant milks are lower in saturated fat and cholesterol. They also contain nutrients like calcium, vitamin D and vitamin B12.
There are also environmental benefits to switching to plant milk, such as fewer greenhouse gases, less water, and less land required when compared to dairy milk.

Can you bake with plant based milk?
So now we’ve discussed plant milk in a little more detail, but can you really bake with it? The answer is yes, of course! Oat milk is a great plant milk to use in baking. Perfect in pancakes, muffins and other cake recipes. Oat milk often comes in different flavours too, such as chocolate and vanilla, so it’s ideal for adding to or enhancing the flavours in your baking.
Almond milk is another great addition to many recipes. It has a very creamy taste, just like oat milk. It’s nutty flavour means it works great in recipes that contain nuts, such as walnut cake, peanut butter cookies, almonds slices and almond milk banana bread, using Organic Almonds Whole.
