The male menopause
Now of course men don’t actually go through the menopause but there are changes that happen with hormones that can be likened to the menopause that women experience. A decline in testosterone can cause problems such as low mood, erectile disfunction, weight gain and premature ejaculation. This decline is usually gradual for most men but some do experience a more rapid decline which can have more of a noticeable effect. There are many ways to deal with these problems such as simple lifestyle changes or medication but it starts by understanding the route cause.
Diet and exercise
As weight gain is common for men in their 40’s, a good diet and exercise are very important. Men start to lose muscle mass and bone density just as women do as they age, so weight training is a great way to stay fit and combat this.
Watch out for type two diabetes too, which is something that is common amongst men as they age. Type two diabetes can be reversed with a healthy diet and exercise but of course it is easier to try to prevent the condition in the first place. Being overweight is a big risk factor to look out for, so weight loss is important.

Sleep
Sleep can become more difficult for men in their 40’s due to factors such as stress and hormone changes. So it’s important to follow a good sleep routine. Make sure you’re getting at least eight hours of sleep each night and try to stick to the same bed time and wake up time where possible. If this doesn’t help, consult a medical professional who will be able to offer further advice.
Hair loss
The drop in testosterone can also cause hair loss in men. Some men choose to embrace this, or shave their hair off completely but there are other options available if you want to grow your hair back. You might want to consider a hair transplant or something like minoxidil which can help hair to grow back.
Mental health
As hormones change and life throws stress at us, we can start to notice our mental health suffering. It’s important to always seek professional advice if you’re suffering with anxiety or depression. Medication may be the answer, or perhaps therapy. But simple lifestyle changes might also be the key, such as changes to diet or increasing your physical activity. It’s also important to talk to friends and loved ones about how you’re feeling, as this alone can often make things feel lighter.
