A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO WINTER HIKING

So you’re planning a winter hike but aren’t sure where to start? We’re here to help! Hiking in winter is a very different experience to hiking in any other season. If you aren’t properly prepared your experience might put you off hiking all together. But as long as you are prepared, winter can actually be the very best season for hiking.

Let’s take a look…

Equipment

There are some essential pieces of equipment that you really shouldn’t hike without, especially in winter. A good waterproof backpack is important, as is the correct clothing, which we will cover in more detail in the next point. Trekking poles are ideal for winter hikes also as they can be used to help you across particularly icy or snowy areas.

Ever heard of gaiters? These are worn at the top of your walking boots to stop water or snow from getting in, therefore keeping your feet as dry and warm as possible. Gaiters are generally fairly cheap too so are a great addition to your winter hiking gear.

Clothing

Layers are very important when hiking in winter. You’ll want to invest in good quality thermal base layers, including socks and gloves. Waterproof outer layers are also essential as you will need to be prepared for wet or snowy weather. A good quality waterproof coat will serve you well for many years.

Waterproof trainers or hiking boots are also something to consider. If your feet get wet while you’re out hiking, you will very quickly become uncomfortable and you could even develop frost bite.

Planning your route

It’s very important, particularly in winter to plan your route as some paths can be quite hazardous. Ideally you should stick to a route that you are familiar with and have hiked numerous times before. You should also choose a route that is suitable for your experience. Hiking is without doubt harder in winter, so you should not be planning to hike a difficult route with little experience. Research and planning are crucial and will keep you safe.

Staying safe

Safety should always be your number one priority when hiking. As mentioned earlier, make sure you are dressed for the conditions with plenty of layers and waterproofs. Take enough food and water in case your hike takes longer than expected.

Finally, never go on a hike alone and always make sure someone back home knows where you are planning to go and how long you expect it to take. This way, if something goes wrong or you get lost someone can raise the alarm for you when you fail to return home.

Weather

Always check the weather forecast before leaving for your hike because no matter how prepared you think you are, some weather conditions simply aren’t safe to hike in. Some routes can even be prone to avalanches, so make sure you research this while planning your hike.

We hope that this article has been helpful. Good luck with your next winter hike!
